Do you wear sunscreen in autumn and winter?

If yes: has it made a good difference to your skin, which one do you use?

If not: why not?

I do and have done for the past 10 years at least. At least a separate SPF30 if not 50. I use retinol, acids and run alot outside. I have recently started getting pigmentation despite wearing sunscreen so there is not way I'd be without. I am not sure yet what effect it has had on aging. I suppose time will tell. I use any SS with 5 star UVA protection, currently Altruist SPF50.

withlotsoflove · 12/09/2019 16:29

Yes! SPF 50 every day!
SPF in moisturisers might as well be treacle!

7Worfs · 12/09/2019 16:38

Kiehl’s SPF50 every day if I’m going out, very light and absorbent but leaves a bit of shine.
(Though not using it now as the baby is in my face all day and don’t want it rubbing on his skin)

Lamentations · 12/09/2019 16:56

Yes. Only been religious about it for the last couple of years though.

TheKitchenWitch · 12/09/2019 17:15

No.
I asked about this a while ago and was astonished at the number of people who wear it every single day.

Delatron The sun is the number one cause of ageing

Actually, I think that's age or +time*.

I do wonder about how much of a difference it would have made to my skin. My dsis and I are both low on sunscreen use (high summer only), I wear make-up every day and moisturise, dsis wears no make-up and occasional moisturiser.
She has smooth, tight, wrinkle-free skin, while I look like a prune.
Interestingly, she takes completely after our mother who had super smooth skin, whereas I have our dad's pale, sallow, wrinkly skin.

It's all in the genes Smile

managedmis · 12/09/2019 17:17

I rarely use it tbh. I just avoid the sun between 11am-4pm.

HATE that greasy feel

silver1977 · 12/09/2019 17:28

I wear it every day all year round. I suffer with pigmentation /melasma. I also take vit D so thats always an option for anyone worried? Like a pp said though, any skin on show can absorb vit D from the sun, it doesn't have to be your face.

It doesn't tend to count if spf is within your moisturiser or foundation apparantly? Something I've read somewhere before. It's the best thing you can do for your skin.

Delatron · 12/09/2019 17:50

Obviously after the passing of time! Which ages us all.

Seriously, there’s been many studies on this. Yes genes play a part, of course they do. But if you stick your sun in the face every day with no protection you will fare worse than someone who wears SPF all year round. It catches up with you eventually.

I’m astonished that people don’t wear it!
SPF and retin A are the only anti-ageing beauty products with any science and research behind them.

And no the amount you get from your foundation or moisturiser isn’t enough and won’t protect from UVA.

I am a former sun worshipper so I guess I’m trying to reverse damage done and prevent future damage. I’ve spent money on lasers (to get rid of sun damage) and use Retin A so I’d be really stupid not to use it. I’m also outside a lot all year round.

efirn · 12/09/2019 19:41

hi everyone, so the questions to those who DO :)
do you also put it on children every morning, both boys and girls, every day of the year?
Studies show sun protection wears off with time, so do you top it up every couple hours as recommended? when you top it up on yourself through the day, do you reapply make up?

Delatron · 12/09/2019 20:12

I do top up in the day but I’ve given up on make up. To be honest with the retin A and lasers etc my skin doesn’t need foundation. I guess it’s tricky to keep reapplying over the top of makeup but there are sprays now.

No I have 2 boys and wouldn’t put suncream on their face every day. It’s something I did from mid 20s for wrinkle prevention so I’ll leave that up to them. Husband never wears suncream 🙄. It’s a personal decision. Kids will wear suncream if the sun is strong enough to burn but not for anti ageing.

7Worfs · 12/09/2019 20:28

@Delatron tell me more about the laser please?
I have sun damage on my forehead and top of cheekbones, looks like giant freckles Sad, pregnancy pigmentation made it really visible too

Delatron · 12/09/2019 20:36

@7Worfs I had something called threeforme laser. The IPL part targets pigmentation and sun damage and breaks it down. It got rid of some dark spots and really helped with pigmentation. Then the next laser part stimulates collagen so this takes about 3 months for you to see effect. Fine lines reduced, texture of skin better. I have about one a year. Expensive though about £500.

7Worfs · 12/09/2019 20:47

Ah cool, I’ve had IPL for hair removal (which come to think of it needs topping up), I’ll get on it. Thank you Cake

ermwhatda · 12/09/2019 20:49

I agree: if you use OTC retinols, you should always use a SPF of at least 30 separately to your make up. The retinol increases your risk of sunburn and, therefore, skin cancers and also, the retinol breaks down in the sun, hence why it's recommended to apply retinols at night.

The higher the concentration of retinol, the higher the spf needs to be. And I also agree, that most people think they're protected via their make up and tinted moisturisers, but you'd have to whack it on with a trowel to get the protection the companies reckon those products have.

I'm 42, and have just started noticing fine lines around my eyes, which I don't think is too bad. I use a Nivea Protect and Bronze face cream, factor 50, (which doesn't contain fake tan!) and a Malibu anti-ageing face cream, spf 50. The nivea one is more greasy than the Malibu, both cost around £5.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/09/2019 20:52

I have used sun screen all the year round since my 20s.im in my 60s now and think I have good skin, few wrinkles. I wish I'd used it more on my hands though as they have age spots.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/09/2019 20:53

I've use factor 30 or 50, any make.

Dizzywizz · 12/09/2019 20:57

Surely though you have to keep reapplying it? I have it in my make up and moisturiser and also put sunscreen on in the summer. But where I would reapply to my body every few hours I wouldn’t to my face. So what’s the point?

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/09/2019 21:00

For me the point is that after doing this for 40 years my skin is better than most people I know my age. That's all, nothing more scientific.

TwatCat · 12/09/2019 21:21

Nope. Don't wear foundation or moisturiser at all ever. I rarely put sunscreen on my face in the summer either, unless it's bloody roasting and I start to burn.

I also only use soap and water to wash my face.

I'm 38 and have great skin.

Delatron · 12/09/2019 21:24

Yes you will have great skin, you’re 38.

Come back when you’re late 40s. Not being harsh but I see that lots on here, of course you don’t have wrinkles and sun damage yet....it takes a while for it to show. It doesn’t show up in your 30s.

TwatCat · 12/09/2019 21:41

Delatron, I just stay out of the sun.
When I'm in my 40's I'll look like a person in their 40's. I have white hairs on my head. I really don't give a shit to be honest.

Some people won't ever get to their 40's. If I get to my 40's and I'm wrinkled to shit and only have white hairs then I'm lucky. Some people can only wish and dream to grow old.

OMGshefoundmeout · 13/09/2019 08:28

It doesn’t show up in your 30s

It might not have for you but for many women it does.

withlotsoflove · 13/09/2019 09:20

Many people think they have great skin~ but don’t really get what that is.
Sun breaks down collagen. So wrinkles are one thing < sagging ( which can be slowed down with SPF) is another!

Delatron · 13/09/2019 10:47

Yes it can show up in your 30s too. My point was that if you have great skin at 38 then that doesn’t mean you’ll have great skin at 45. Especially if you’ve never worn suncream.

Agree with lotsoflove.

Even if you keep your face out of the sun you can’t stay inside all day every day and it’s the incremental damage that builds up. Plus many people aren’t aware that UVA rays penetrate clouds and glass and are the same strength all year round.

So on a cloudy Jan day you will still get UVA damage.

Fresta · 13/09/2019 13:49

Use a mineral sunscreen as this doesn't break down in the sun and lasts all day unless you sweat a lot or rub it off! Even if your sunscreen does break down or wear off throughout the day at least you will have benefitted from it for a good portion of the day which is better than none. If you do want to reapply then Coola have a new make-up setting spray with spa 30 which you can spray over makeup.
