Do you wear sunscreen in autumn and winter?

If yes: has it made a good difference to your skin, which one do you use?

If not: why not?

I wear a moisturiser with suncream in everyday, and during the summer if I'm outdoors an additional SPF50 suncream.

BentNeckLady · 11/09/2019 20:01

No, I never wear it even in summer. I’m 40 with no wrinkles. We need sun.

cloud1183 · 11/09/2019 20:03

Never used to but since I started using active skincare products like acid toner and retinol then I have purchased a spf factor 50 for my face which I intend to use every day. I purchased a heliocare spf and it’s quite pricey but actually makes a great primer under makeup and is oil free so doesn’t clog my pores

BigButtons · 11/09/2019 20:03

I have worn spf 50 all year round, everyday for at least 17 years now. I'm 52 and don't look anywhere near my age.
I use retina A anyway so it's doubly important that my skin is protected.

BigButtons · 11/09/2019 20:05

UVA rays- the ones that age you- are the same strength all year round and can pass through glass.

LynetteScavo · 11/09/2019 20:29

My favourite daily moisturiser has factor 20 - I've just bought a more expensive one which is only factor 15. I thought almost all moisturisers had spf.

TheClitterati · 11/09/2019 20:44

Not as a rule. Perhaps if I was going to be out all day in the sun I would.

I'm rather keen on Vit D.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/09/2019 21:16

My daily moisturiser - Clarins - has SPF 15. Tbh it is dark here by about 3.30 in a few weeks, so I will barely see the sun until the clocks change again at Easter!

YesQueen · 11/09/2019 21:17

Yep, if I'm outside. If I'm just at work when I'm inside all day then no
And separate SPF 50 as moisturiser with it in doesn't really cover due to the amount you need to apply

Propertyofhood · 11/09/2019 21:24

I have upped my SPF use since using acid toners etc.

However, in the dead of winter, when it's dark going to and from work and you barely go outside, its probably a waste of money to use it really isn't it?

Wellhellothere101 · 11/09/2019 21:24

Yes I use a Japanese sunscreen every day-factor 50. I use acid toners and tretinoin cream though so have to wear it. For those saying we need sun and vitamin D I take vitamin D tablets every day. If you find a sunscreen that suits your skin why wouldn’t you protect it and avoid wrinkles?

ChickenyChick · 11/09/2019 21:32

I have gone wrinkly and splodgy (melasma) and use sunscreen, but seem to sweat it off and on cloudy days I sometimes forget....

So I am brown and splodgy and wrinkly (i also grimace/frown a lot)

I am a hopeless case!

Delatron · 11/09/2019 21:43

Yes. The sun is the number one cause of ageing and UVA rays (the deep penetrating ageing ones) are the same strength all year round and penetrate clouds.
I use a separate SPF cream ( you will not use enough of your foundation to get sufficient protection). It must have an ultra UVA rating. Many moisturisers are just UVB.

I also use Retin-A so sunscreen all year round is an absolute must.

Don’t understand ‘we need sun’. Yes we need vitamin D. In this country you will get this from the sun from April until the end of September and you are far better exposing arms/legs than your face unprotected (in terms of preventing wrinkles). Then supplement vitamin D in the winter.

Delatron · 11/09/2019 21:44

If you just rely on your moisturiser for SPF check that it has a UVA rating in a circle. Otherwise it’s not protecting you sufficiently.

ThursdayLastWeek · 11/09/2019 21:48

I didn’t but I’ve started using Salicylic acid regularly so I will.

I’ve been sunburned at a cricket match that was delayed for poor light.

DramaAlpaca · 11/09/2019 22:07

Yes, but only SPF15 in the winter.

eurochick · 11/09/2019 22:40

Not usually, but as I have started using retinol I think I should probably keep up a thin smear through winter. But generally I think we need a bit of vit d.

Delatron · 11/09/2019 22:53

You can’t get vitamin D from the end of September until April though? But you can still get UVA damage on your face.

I don’t understand why people want to get the vitamin D through their faces (and thus age them)? Arms and legs are bigger areas therefore better to expose these but you won’t get any vitamin D in winter. You still get UVA rays.

ViserionTheDragon · 11/09/2019 23:42

Yes, SPF50 every single day when I'm outside. It is what dermatologists are recommending now.

perplexedagain · 11/09/2019 23:44

No because suncream causes my eczema to flare up always. I've tried so many different brands and its always the same

SingingSands · 12/09/2019 00:12

Yes, every day. If I go out in daylight I'm wearing spf. It's not a faff, I get out the shower, moisturise then add spf on top. It's such an easy routine that I don't even think about it.

Evilmorty · 12/09/2019 00:18

My foundation has one in and very few days have passed since I was 17 where I have not worn it. I am very freckly so my face would be completely covered like my arms are if I had not worn it. I still have more freckles each year but no where near the rest of my body. I’m often told I look 10 years younger but I ask have a fat face so it could be that! Grin

OMGshefoundmeout · 12/09/2019 10:54

I started botox/tweakments a few years ago. At my first consultation the doctor was absolutely clear rhat unless I backed up any procedures with the use of an SPF 50 every day I would be wasting my money. I followed the advice (mostly, not on cloudy days when I’m not going out) and am now late fifties and my skin has never looked better.

MinesaPinot · 12/09/2019 13:46

Yes Clinique City Block spf25 Oct - April, then spf40 throughout spring/summer. I've used it since they bought it out I think and I know it has helped.

My moisturiser also has spf.

soundsystem · 12/09/2019 13:56

I do. I'm very pale, though!

I was a teenage goth and have just kept it up! I have good skin, and have only recently (mid-30s) started any kind of skincare regime, so I do think sunscreen has played a part.

Currently using Missha sun milk.
