What has happened to coats???

Hi all

Just wondering if I’m imagining that coats used to be a lot thicker???

Every coat I seem to look at these days seems as insubstantial as a single layer of fuzzy felt....

Where can I find a coat that will actually keep me warm???

I’m looking for a nice thigh length wool coat with cuddly faux fur collar and cuffs... no shiny ski jackets!!!

Anyone have any ideas??

I got an amazing coat in the shop Fat Face in January, not sure if you have that shop in the UK though. It was €100 down from €200 and the warmest coat I've ever owned.

Its a bit early for the full on winter coats. They are more transitional at the minute I think, lighter autumn and spring.
I have a lovely thick wool one from Hobbs that I bought a few years ago.

Many stores have coats in and it’s not too early. Hobbs, Arket and Cos have decent winter coats in now. Wool ones. I would add s fake fur collar because sometimes ones on coats are a bit cheap looking. I would also pay good money and I would get knee length which is more of a classic look if you pay a bit more. Some good coats never go out of fashion.

I agree it's too early for heavy coats, there are a smattering around designed to tempt early shoppers (into then buying more later!) but I'd expect the full winter collections to hit by the end of the month.

A proper wool coat with decent finishing, trims and linings won't be cheap though!

I find wool coats are not warm enough - I wear them autumn and spring - for winter I need something more practical - like the arctic parka.

Reiss can be good for tailored coats. A bit expensive but a good coat lasts.

Second Reiss (their sales are great but that doesn’t help you now) and try Jaeger - TK Maxx often have Jaeger in and they are lovely quality (size down).

Go vintage and rummage charity shops.
Also look at army surplus, you can get a really good quality wool overcoat for not very much money, and they're really simple so very easily tailored.

A decent coat is expensive and one like you describe is probably wool so will cost a bit. My best ever coats have been from Hobbs, good quality and lined with good pockets and collars. If you are going for a classic style try their sale ( John Lewis stocks them too). Or eBay. I also like lk Bennett coats but again pricey. John Lewis own brand may be good and Boden is also good quality but too quirky for my taste. I have a Hobbs coat which is 14 years old and still gets brought out from time to time

My Canada Goose parka is the last coat I'll ever buy. Bought it at a discount outdoor store in NYC for $200 6 years ago and it still looks like new.

Yes, it does appear to be that way. Over the past few years I have not been able to find much that even boasts a lining. . Zara being the worst. I don’t even load up those sites anymore when searching for stuff like coats, shoes. Etc. I’m stuck with expensive ones, and it’s depressing but it has turned me into a minimalist

Same with shoes, bags - even higher end high street asking over £150/£200 for acrylic/nylon/pleather.

I’d say this will only change when we do. We need to quit giving them the wrong message and simply not buy.

Jaeger and French Connection used to be good, but FC have declined a lot recently.

With coats you pay for what you get these days now, Agree with the rest Reiss, Jageur and Hobbs to name a few. Have a good look in TK Maxx - Picked up a knee length military wool coat from Karen Millen for €100. Normally €350. ebay is another great place, For the furry cuffs you can buy these separate and sew on if you don't find them. However the Ski jackets especially the likes of North Face etc are very warm aswell without looking bulky
