Short skirts with chunky legs

I've seen so many autumn skirts and dresses that I really like at the moment, but they all seem to be a couple of inches above the knee and I've never worn anything that short before because I loathe my legs. I am short and fat and carry a lot of my weight around my hips, bum and thighs. I would love to get one of those corduroy pinafore dresses and wear it with opaque tights and a thin sweater underneath, but would I look ludicrous with my big thighs poking out of the bottom??

Also, if I did decide to brave the look, what shoes would work with it? I can't wear ankle boots with skirts because they make my legs look even stumpier and thicker. Are trainers or brogues an acceptable compromise?

what was the tip about 3/4 length trousers? I avoid them as I don't have long legs and usually get asked if my trousers have shrunk.

avoid them! They make your legs look shorter and cut off at a really unflattering place.

Oh good. I just never understood the 3/4 or 7/8 bit. It looks good on tall, slim people but doesn't everything. I don't like elbow or bracelet length sleeves either.

I've started this whole "well I am the shape and size I am!" A short skirt or a long skirt won't make me skinnier so I now wear what I want. The only thing that changes is other people's opinions and if they ain't paying your bills, pay them no mind.

I was trying to get some plain work trousers at M&S today but all the nice ones not in the "cheap shiny fabric" range were 7/8 length. Just why?? I can see how they might look elegant on someone tall and willowy with slim ankles, but I don't want that sort of cankle exposure when I'm at work, thanks.

Bianca an admirable attitude. I just need to get over my own conditioning that you need to have "good legs" to wear particular things.

I have never been in a situation where I notice someone's legs and think they are chunky, let alone think they shouldn't be wearing a certain skirt for that reason!

If you love it, wear it and wear it with joy and abandon! Embrace it!

Those 7/8 length trousers would be just the right full-length on me.
M&S do a good 'short' trouser length.
