Is there anything you treat yourself to after a pay rise or promotion?

Is there anything you would specifically treat yourself to after hard work has paid off and you either receive a long awaited bonus or promotion?

Do you like to mark the occasion with anything special?

I get annual bonuses plus one off payments a few times a year. The smaller payments I usually spend some of it on perfume or clothes or meals out, the annual bonus was spent on garden furniture this year, furniture for the new house last year but the year before I bought myself a set of stacking rings with my DCs birthstones in them. Last promotion I put the entire monthly pay increase into savings, as did DH when he last moved jobs. My last annual increase I increased my AVCs so half the increase went straight to my pension. Should really do the same with the one off payments but they are associated with very busy weeks of work (16h days plus calls at all hours so never switched off) so I feel the need to treat myself. So a mix.

My pay rises are always tiny! But after a smear test i buy myself a handbag.

Namechangenecessity · 05/09/2019 21:57

@JaceLancs really? I promised myself the same ( the pebbled leather courts ) if 1) I kept my job following a redundancy exercise and 2) if I got an external promotion role I applied for . I achieved both and the bloody things have been reduced at Flannels and I still don’t feel like I can buy them! I can afford them but it feels so indulgent, yet I spend on DH/ uni age son without a second thought! Maybe I’ll go and try them on ( again) tomorrow !

A LV bag 😍😍

Woodlandwitch · 05/09/2019 22:07

@BubblesBuddy I’ve just fell in love with Anoushka jewellery!

@KronksSpinachPuffs so far that is exactly what’s happened every times I’ve had bonus or patrias so far.
Either a car needs work, the house needs fixing or something else breaks.

Time to splurge Grin

@31RueCambon75001 that is a well deserved treat. I may adopt doing something similar

@CookieDoughKid very sensible indeed and you will definitely benefit in years to come.

@Namechangenecessity I know the feeling. You want something. You give yourself a target of what you need to do to be able to buy them. Then you smash the target, have the money, find that they are reduced and still end up feeling like it’s hard to justify.
Wish I didn’t feel so guilty at treating myself.
I’m always scared of finally spending and then needing the money a short while after

I like to buy a big item so that I have something to show for it

I’ve got a few mulberry bags, a Burberry mac and a few pairs of CLs

woodland ha! I am trying to fast track early retirement or at take my foot off the gas in my late 40s. Having recently learnt news of 2 members of family (fil and aunt) diagnosed with brain (grade 4) cancer and ovarian cancer both with really poor prognosis and both not yet even 65.. I think life is just too short to be working. By all means treat yourself if it makes you happy as life is indeed too short!!

Namechangenecessity · 05/09/2019 22:19

@Woodlandwitch absolutely! I’ve been mega skint in the past and I always look for bargains/buy stuff from e bay. But I’ve fallen in love with these shoes! The other thing I’m scared of is snagging the heel the first time I wear them 😱

silverystream · 05/09/2019 22:19

If I had a few thousand spare I'd love to treat myself to something from here:

Early retirement sounds lovely

I hope to do the same or at least slow down considerably. We generally live very modestly which helps.

Live definitely is too short Sad

I haven't had a payrise since 2013 so no.

Woodlandwitch · 05/09/2019 22:22

@silverystream that ting is gorgeous! I was just watching the Viking documentary recently on tv and it’s made me feel inspired to get closed to any Norse roots Grin

I can spend ages browsing that site, Woodland. Grin

SuzieQ10 · 05/09/2019 22:35

I have just treated myself to some good quality shampoo and conditioner. £50.
No pay rise or promotion, but I have sold some things I've had for a while and fancied a little treat.

timshelthechoice · 05/09/2019 22:36

Fitflop shoes.

BillyAndTheSillies · 05/09/2019 22:57

I still remember going in to the Mulberry shop to buy a Bayswater after getting my first commission pay after a big promotion. It's the only reason I won't part with the bag I'm so proud of it. That was nearly 10 years ago and I remember shaking because I'd never spent that amount of money on myself before.

Have taken a big pay cut to move to a local job and miss commission and bonuses so much.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/09/2019 23:32

We don’t tend to get much of a payrise, but at the end of each academic year I buy myself a present as a “reward” for having survived, usually a piece of jewellery from Tatty Devine. A few years ago my leaving students gave me John Lewis vouchers which I used to buy an Alex Monroe necklace. I tend to associate the jewellery with my graduating class, so it’s a nice marker.

Binkybix · 05/09/2019 23:41

silvery that’s where my engagement ring is from! I too can spend hours on that site.

DevaDiva · 06/09/2019 00:00

One of my favourite new job treats was a Lulu Guinness handbag. I love her 4 years later 😍 😀

silverystream · 06/09/2019 07:25

Binky, wow! I bet your engagement ring is fantastic! Smile

StCharlotte · 06/09/2019 09:27

I've changed jobs and gone from a business/casual dress code to a more traditional business so my first month's salary increase will be spent on smartening up my work wardrobe
