What should I wear with this dress?

Anyone help me re shoes and tights for this dress - it's for a birthday function type thing. I really like the dress on but need to look more party-ish - can't go without tights unfortunately.
Ideas of colour or style for tights and shoes would be great!

What should I wear with this dress?

Definitely black opaques, the model would look so much better with them too!

Joh66 · 28/08/2019 00:14

Black opaques are very dated! I definitely wouldn't.

Horatioroses · 28/08/2019 06:49

You realise I now haven't a clue Grin

The model would look better if she wasn't wearing ankle boots with it. They foreshorten legs terribly and make most people's legs look chunkier than they are.

Horatioroses · 28/08/2019 16:25

I should mention I'm in my late 40s so chances of being dated are fairly high!

What length is it on you?

Horatioroses · 28/08/2019 21:52

I'd say it's on the other side of my knee to the model. Guessing I'm shorter!

I'd wear that with nude tights and probably navy heels, definitely no booties

chipsandgin · 29/08/2019 10:36

I’m with you OP, dated is clearly my thing (late forties!!) 😬

slipperyeel · 29/08/2019 11:18

I think it would look nice with brogues or unbranded white leather trainers, but I am fairly casual

Ohyesiam · 29/08/2019 11:20

Heels would make the dress very dated. But that’s ok if it’s what suits you and what you’re comfortable with.

Kyvia · 29/08/2019 11:22

Maybe a bit marmite but my personal style I’d go with coloured tights - maybe dark teal or aubergine. Don’t care if I look dated Grin

It’s lovely where is it from?

wonkywheels · 29/08/2019 11:52

Don’t wear heels/courts unless you do want to look a bit dated. Ankle boots for sure - fearne cotton wore something a bit similar on this morning this week and looked fab. I know we can’t all afford boots from vivienne westwood or be fearne cotton - but point is ankle boots much more modern - if that matters to you!

Horatioroses · 29/08/2019 12:35

Thanks for all the replies - food for thought, and especially re the boots/no boots debate! I will try loads of shoes on and see what (if anything) works. Or take dress back to shop! It's just from M&S Kyvia . I tried loads on and this was the first one I felt happy in.

Are black opaques very dated? How depressing!

What's not dated for winter legs?

QuaterMiss · 29/08/2019 13:37

The whole point of a dress like that is that it should look unconsidered. Bare legs with either trainers or halfway up the shin cowboy boots are the only acceptable choices.

If you don’t want to go bare legged, then find some loose flowing trousers to wear beneath. Or choose a different dress!

Elllllle · 29/08/2019 14:10

Omg... loose flowing trousers to wear beneath?

I've tried but I cant imagine what I'd wear with it. Maybe ankle boots but a bit more ankle length than the model? Both heeled pumps and trainers would look dowdy. I think it's the dress! Def no to nude tights. Fake tan or bronzer if you go bare.

CmdrCressidaDuck · 29/08/2019 15:55

What do you wear with dresses and skirts this A/W though, if black opaques are not on point? Or does it have to be bare legs or trousers?

Apolloanddaphne · 29/08/2019 16:11

I would wear black plaques and black block heel pumps. I am probably dated but I don't really care.

Apolloanddaphne · 29/08/2019 16:11

Opaques!

Ticklemeelmo · 29/08/2019 16:54

Wtf, black opaque tights are a Winter staple. Give me those any day over awful flesh coloured tights Grin

Wonderbag · 29/08/2019 22:07

Really like that dress.
