Midi dress and footwear

What does one wear on their feet with a midi dress in Autumn /Winter? All summer I've been in sandals. Are brogues OK? I just can't nail the ankle boot look. With anything.
I've been following a brogue thread with interest. I really want a pair now

Trainers? Or platform/flatform brogues maybe? Have you tried different styles of ankle boot, I find they do work well? There do seem to be more knee high boots around for winter.

I've tried many. I just never seem to find the right pair. I've skinny ankles so I feel I just end up looking like I'm wearing wellies😂
