Only one make up counter, which one?

I need a complete make up do-over, I'm just running out of foundation and want to go for a bit of everything but I dont fancy schlepping through a few counters so just thought I'd go to one, speak to a consultant and get a face made and buy what I liked.

I'll probably go to Sepfridges so have the choice of Mac, Charlotte Tilbury, Bobbi Brown etc. Which one would you recommend?

I'm a fair skinned white woman and want regular, good quality make up for day to day that lasts well and looks well.

Any recommendations please!

I think I'd struggle to narrow down to one. I like different brands for different products.

Clinique and Lancome for mascara.
EL and Laura Mercier for foundation.
Bobbi Brown for lipsticks.

If forced to choose I reckon I'd go for Laura Mercier.

@Alsihuman

Me again! I’ve been interested in beauty pie for awhile but it’s hard to get my head round it - if I pay the £10 subscription can I spend £100 against the ‘member prices’?

Ninkaninus · 28/08/2019 09:13

Ok I thought that sounded far too good to be true! Think I’ve got it now - the £100 allowance is against original price, not member prices. Right?

Ninkaninus · 28/08/2019 09:17

(As I said, no coffee yet! Grin Grin )

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/08/2019 09:43

No, when you pay £10 membership you can buy at reduced prices, up to the limit of your allowance, which is typically £100 an month.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/08/2019 09:43

Or what you said.

Blush
Ninkaninus · 28/08/2019 09:52

I’ve had a cup of coffee now and I’m still not convinced that I’ve got it! Grin

Nah it’s pretty straightforward.

Reviews on some things are mixed but I guess it’s worth a punt at the prices you pay...

jcurve · 28/08/2019 09:57

If you are planning to go to Selfridges, I’d recommend Liberty instead if they stock the counter you want - I find the Selfridges makeup hall really hard work with all the tourists in terms of getting service and having space to browse. I’ve had really good service at Liberty though for Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier.

@Ninkaninus, it’s the compact that every other brand incorporates as standard. Chantecaille sell you the basic pan of eyeshadow and then take more money from you for the compact that actually makes it useable. As if their (wonderful) eyeshadow doesn’t cost enough to start with. I really want Sel but I can’t bring myself to part with two hefty sums to buy it.

Ninkaninus · 28/08/2019 10:13

Argh yes... I bristle at the prices as it is... but they are sooooo beautiful!

Alsohuman · 28/08/2019 10:14

I know 😢

GloGirl · 30/08/2019 08:46

I cheated! I went and spent time with their Beauty Insider and got products across a few different ranges. I didnt know that desk existed.

I bought a Charlotte Tilbury eyeshadow quad palette and put it on yesterday over some concealer- all the eye shadow had gone by within 7 hours? (And my mascara was still on?! So I hadn't rubbed it off)

Any suggestions on keeping it on? The colours were nice. I might try to skip the concealer base but I thought that was best to help it stay on Hmm

You need an eye primer. The Nars one is good.

GloGirl · 30/08/2019 08:57

I've never needed a primer before - I appreciate my eye shadows might not have lasted as well or as long previously but I've never seen anything like it for just disappearing!! Is it just me?

Will get a primer, but am tempted to return the shadow and maybe swap it for a Chanel which I've used with success (when I pinched my mothers Grin )

To be honest I think CT is all fur coat and no knickers but that’s spectacularly unhelpful! I don’t think they’ll take your palette back now you’ve used it. Sorry, I know that’s unhelpful too.

WinterHare · 30/08/2019 09:07

Bobbi brown Smile

lawdylawd · 30/08/2019 09:13

I personally would lean towards Estée Lauder, benefit or fenty beauty. Their range is so inclusive bound to find something that fits your skin tone beautifully.

ParmesanOfVirtue · 30/08/2019 09:23

Bobbi Brown.

Ninkaninus · 30/08/2019 09:37

@Alsohuman I’ve always had that sense from CT, too - once in a while I’ll put a product on my wish list but it always comes back off.

Sorry OP, that doesn’t help you now of course. Try Bobbi Brown next. They do this great little palette which comes in a range of colours:

www.bobbibrown.co.uk/product/13996/68192/palettes-and-sets/the-essential-multicolor-eye-shadow-palette/fh19#/shade/Burnished_Bronze

There is 20% off atm which helps.

GloGirl · 30/08/2019 09:58

Ooh that's so pretty!

Ninkaninus · 30/08/2019 10:17

If you can stretch to one of the cream eyeshadow sticks in a neutral shade that fits your eyelid skin tone then that works very well as a primer for the eye shadows to stick to. But I don’t usually use primer and I’ve always found BB to have excellent staying power.

Ninkaninus · 30/08/2019 10:19

If you love the colours in the CT palette then why not keep it and use it for nights out?

Ninkaninus · 30/08/2019 10:25

D’oh I just read back and realised you’re already familiar with BB! I guess you know whether you want to try it again or would rather go for the Chanel. Chanel do gorgeous, creamy looking colours but I’ve never actually tried them. I do like Estée Lauder a lot as well.

Alsohuman · 30/08/2019 10:30

The Chanel colours are lovely but they’re baked so you don’t get that lovely buttery texture of eg Guerlain. I’ve been very tough on myself with palettes lately, however pretty they are, there’s always one colour I never use.

Ninkaninus · 30/08/2019 10:34

Oh okay, yeah Chanel wouldn’t be for me, then. Yes I know what you mean on palettes. I’m easily seduced by a concept but I’ve got plenty now (10 or 12 I think?) and I’m going to switch to singles that I actually need, that are different enough from what I already have. Maybe I’ll just get a few colours from Chantecaille and scratch that itch once and for all!
