Only one make up counter, which one?

GloGirl · 27/08/2019 17:53

I need a complete make up do-over, I'm just running out of foundation and want to go for a bit of everything but I dont fancy schlepping through a few counters so just thought I'd go to one, speak to a consultant and get a face made and buy what I liked.

I'll probably go to Sepfridges so have the choice of Mac, Charlotte Tilbury, Bobbi Brown etc. Which one would you recommend?

I'm a fair skinned white woman and want regular, good quality make up for day to day that lasts well and looks well.

Any recommendations please!

I have looked at the beauty pie website, but I'm not getting it!!

Alsohuman · 27/08/2019 20:03

You pay Beauty Pie £10 a month which gives you £100 allowance against its products. The skincare is great.

TitianaTitsling · 27/08/2019 20:06

Wow! Thanks also much more succinct!

AllInTheBestPossibleTaste · 27/08/2019 20:10

Laura Mercia

XingMing · 27/08/2019 21:06

Beauty Pie is a subscription buying group. You subscribe £10 p month for a minimum 3 months, and buy their unbranded skincare and cosmetics, made by reputable/high end labs, in their packaging at near wholesale price. The catch is that your choice is limited by the retail "value" so your purchase is limited to the retail price per month. BUT, their products are, in my experience, very good indeed.

Alsohuman · 27/08/2019 21:11

Maybe Beauty Pie should employ me to write their copy! 😉

NoBaggyPants · 27/08/2019 21:17

Bobbi Brown or Laura Mercier.

Asitgoes · 27/08/2019 21:22

Selfridges in Trafford centre (Manchester) does bookable sessions not affiliated to a particular brand. The usual redeemable against purchase deal. Something like £30 for 45 mins. Probs do the same in London?

kenandbarbie · 27/08/2019 21:26

Charlotte tilbury for a more glamorous look
Bobbi brown for a natural look

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 27/08/2019 21:43

Laura Mercier or EL

Or Mac. Or Chanel.

Ok I would struggle to narrow it down to one!

GloGirl · 27/08/2019 22:50

Pfft! Hardly conclusive! You're all no help Grin

Tempted by Nars and Laura Mercier as I haven't tried any of their make up before and dont know much about it (and CT, but they are getting mixed reviews here).

Fell out with bobbi brown, I bought a replacement for my gel eyeliner and the new formula wipes off very quick. But I like the ethos and make up style.

Surprised not to see more Mac recommendation I liked my foundation but I do see it's marketing towards rich teens now!

Chanel or Tom Ford if you want luxury.

Mac if you’re wanting something more affordable.

raisinseverywhere · 27/08/2019 23:18

GloGirl - interesting you say that about Bobbi Brown because I loved their slanted eyebrow pencil, and recently bought a new one but they have changed the formula and it’s not as waxy now, but drier, which is so disappointing.

Destinesia · 27/08/2019 23:20

Just go to Space NK as SinglePringle suggested, one consultant can advise across brands then, as they have Nars, Laura Mercier, Tom Ford etc. They also have Chantecaille, who do the most amazing foundation but so £££

TheFaerieQueene · 27/08/2019 23:21

Trish McEvoy in Selfridges.

Jade218 · 27/08/2019 23:26

MAC all the way

GloGirl · 28/08/2019 01:13

Oh yes someone recommended Chantecaille to me recently, supposed to be amazing and only a little bit needed. I've never seen the brand in person. Think I need to start investing more in make up and spend a little more time.

My Mum has a lot of Chanel make up so I am always put off as I want to feel young Grin

Chantecaille is great if you find a foundation shade that works for you. Their choice is a bit limited, if you find your shade though the product itself is really good.

Alsohuman · 28/08/2019 08:24

I think Chantecaille is a complete piss take. Buy the (admittedly great) eyeshadow and then fork out again for the “pebble” to make it useable. No thanks.

Ninkaninus · 28/08/2019 08:29

Ohhhh Chantecaille is the brand I’ve been trying to remember for ages! Every so often I find it again, then forget what it is, again, and can’t for the life of me remember what it’s called!

I must admit their eyeshadows are seductively beautiful....

Fairylea · 28/08/2019 08:31

I worked on Clinique and then Chanel for 20 years altogether.

Being honest your best bet is to find a consultant you think looks nice and ask for their help, regardless of the brand. If they can do their own make up well they’re likely to be able to do yours well too. Keep in mind they’re probably told to wear more than they normally would though- with Clinique we were told to wear certain things / new shades etc.

All the brands are similar in terms of training and many people swap between them - like me- so you won’t necessarily get someone better just because it’s a particular brand.

Obviously if you really like a brands products that narrows it down!

Verite1 · 28/08/2019 08:36

I wear different bits from different companies so could not just pick one. I would def say Charlotte tilbury is generally more a glamour going out look rather than a day wear look. I do have some things from there which I like, but with the exception of one lipstick, they are all for evening.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 28/08/2019 08:39

Bobbi Brown. They used to do free makeup lessons/makeovers/ hard sell which might be good for someone in your situation. Not sure if they still do.

BeaverPeron · 28/08/2019 08:39

I think i'd choose Space NK - sorry slightly cheating, but it has lots of lovely brands there.

I do like Nars, Laura Mercier, Lipstick Queen and they stock it there.

Ninkaninus · 28/08/2019 08:44

@Alsohuman what is this ‘pebble’ of which you speak?
