What to wear for drinks/ work night out?

I recently joined a new team at work who has organised a welcome do ( for me) plus leaving do for the member I'm replacing! It's drinks at a bar followed by a meal.

I moved to the UK two years ago and worked independently and part time so never really had any night outs except for Christmas/ new year parties. I also haven't socialised in the uk much and especially on my own due to young DC.

I have no idea what to wear for this? Probably overthinking it but don't want to show up and feel out of place.

Any suggestions most welcome 🙏🏽

Can’t go wrong with skinny jeans/ leather leggings, heels, cami top and blazer if needed imo

Thanks both! I'm one of the weird few who doesn't own skinny jeans Grin. I have straight jeans, high waisted cropped etc but no skinny. May have an old pair of leather leggings which I can dig up.

Look massive in blazers for some reason so don't wear them.

Going to look for a suitable midi dress and heels then. Thanks again.

Skinny jeans and a "nice" top are NOT the go to outfit for a night out also horribly dated. Why on earth would you feel the need to "dig out" some old leather leggings which clearly aren't in your current rotation just to fit in. You won't fit in , precisely because the outfit won't reflect you.

I would find out where you're going in terms of where in the casual -smart spectrum it lies and then wear your version of that. Your colleagues want to get to know you, not some identikit clone. You've a hopefully long time working with them and a lot more nights out, don't set yourself up for feeling you can't be yourself from the get-go.

Since when are skinny jeans and a nice top “horribly dated” 😂 it’s literally all I ever see people wearing on a night out.

Also OP I agree any style of jeans will be fine for a night out. Hope you enjoy!

This is my weekend style although I DO Not look anything as good as this! these jeans look best on me. Maybe I could dress it up with heels.

This is what I was planning on wearing although wasn't sure if it was OTT.

Are people going straight from work? In some places that just means they'll go as they are.

chasingseagulls · 24/08/2019 09:43

Both are fine as long as they fit in with where you're going. The jeans looks are fine wherever, you can wear trainers or shoes to dress up or down. The second pic with the Markus Lupfer sweater and Valentinos is rather dressy unless you're going to The Ivy level bar/restaurant I would say. Bit dressy from a standard pub.

Can you swing by the places you're going before hand, on another night, to get a feel for the type of place you're going? Failing that, just ask your colleagues what they normally do!

keiratwiceknightly · 24/08/2019 09:49

I love your chosen outfit but if you're concerned about being overdressed maybe wear trainers instead of heels

Elllllle · 24/08/2019 10:55

I agree with keira - I would swap the shoes for something more casual, otherwise the outfit looks good to me

hopelesslyunstylish · 24/08/2019 11:41

@chasingseagulls yes I agree the second outfit is dressy. I have similar sweater skirt and shoes all much cheaper and from high street stores. I'm going to swap the shoes for a court shoe type thing I think.

My problem is I love clothes and overthink even my workwear!!!

Don't wear court shoes. Pleather skirts look great with trainers or Converse, and it's unlikely you'd be under-dressed, unless the bar/restaurant are very posh, or unless you're in somewhere like Liverpool, where people still tend to get really dressed up for a night out (or so it looked like last time I was there!).

Completely agree with remus
