Another wedding guest one...

Going to the post-wedding evening do (not the wedding itself) in November. Canapes, drinks, dancing etc.

It's a second wedding for (a slightly older) both bride and groom so low-key in that sense BUT it's looking like a quite glitzy evening (bride is very glam and stylish).

I'm thinking an LBD maybe?

I don't trust myself with evening wear as I never go to evening events and my usual style is very minimalist so if I don't get some advice I will end up in one of my trusty black sack dresses with heels and a clutch and it WON'T WORK!!!

Any thoughts on this?

www.johnlewis.com/jolie-moi-lace-bodice-pleated-dress/black/p4099236

Is it a bit frumpy with the waist jobbie and the bow at the back?

I'm early 40s, size 10, no boobs, wide shoulders and ribcage, skinny-but-decent legs. I ALWAYS cover my shoulders (even if just a cap sleeve) as I have a mole on my shoulder that I loathe with a passion, plus tbh I don't suit strappy dresses, even wide straps, as my shoulders are hefty and I have an athletic build so I look a bit hulking if I'm not careful!

I don't want to spend more than £100 absolute top whack, as I won't get a huge amount of wear out of whatever I buy. Closer to £70 would be better. I already have some nice silver slingbacks and can get a cheap silver clutch to 'match' from somewhere.

Any other suggestions much appreciated!

Oh or there is this one.

I'm not obsessed with this Jolie Moi brand or anything, just browsing on John Lewis in my lunch hour and ended up finding these.

I like Warehouse for (day) dresses but nothing 'evening' enough on there at the mo.

I think both of them are lovely. Which one do you think would look best regarding your arms?

HepburnKNotA · 21/08/2019 14:32

Thanks Aquamarine! That's a good question. I would probably have to try both on and then send the other one back! Probably the first one would suit me more as I have NO cleavage so the V-neck might gape a bit on the second.

I have also just found this one on asos but worried it's too young for me. Love the high neck, though, I love a high neck!

Love the chi chi one! Id say that one.

HepburnKNotA · 21/08/2019 14:38

moonpiggle, it's nice, isn't it? I'm not 25 and stunning like the model it's on, of course... possibly worth trying it on at home and seeing if I can pull it off or not. I will post on here for honest feedback!

Aquamarine1029 · 21/08/2019 14:39

Ooh, I like that, too! I don't think it's too young. The flirty tulle skirt is wonderful. I love skirts like that!

HepburnKNotA · 21/08/2019 14:42

Thanks again Aqua!

OK I am going to take the plunge and order it and then will post a pic on here if I'm brave enough...

That still gives me plenty of time to try one of the Jolie Moi ones if I don't like it...

The Chi Chi one is by far the best, the other two are aging and a bit frumpy (sorry OP).

HepburnKNotA · 21/08/2019 14:49

Thanks peachgreen; don’t apologise, I was a bit concerned about frumpiness too!

ordered, thanks so much everyone; I will post a picture when it gets here.

Love the Chi Chi one
Also what about this

This dress is stunning on and a real bargain
My Dd bought this recently and wore it with leopard print sandals, the photos really do not do it justice.

moonpiggle · 21/08/2019 15:19

Its beautiful. Classy too. No way are you too old! Go for the chi chi one.

HepburnKNotA · 21/08/2019 15:25

Oh I like that second boohoo one a lot wee one!

First is lovely too but won’t work with my shoulders-covered dictat sadly.

Will see how I go with the ChiChi and keep that boohoo one in mind

@HepburnKNotA I love that Chi Chi one!! I'd go for that. If it helps my mum is mid 40s and I would tell her to go for that one out of the 3. Tbh I would borrow it to wear as well 🙈

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/08/2019 15:43

I wonder if there is ever a dress thread on MN in which the words 'ageing and frumpy' don't appear? I like the first dress posted - I don't think it's ageing or frumpy at all, whatever the fuck that's even supposed to mean.

peachgreen · 21/08/2019 16:19

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Point taken and I should have been more careful with my wording. I suppose I more meant that the traditional shape and heavy lace feel a bit dated and given OP is only 40 and has a fabulous figure I think she could go a bit more "high fashion".

HepburnKNotA · 21/08/2019 19:31

You’re very kind (though I fear entirely inaccurate) to say I have a fabulous figure, peach Grin

Fair point re the ‘frumpy’ bit Remus; I need to think of a different word to describe what I meant. I just want to look fresh and modern and as if I’ve made an effort! Day dressing doesn’t faze me much but anything requiring ‘evening wear’ I have no clue...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/08/2019 21:29

Good luck with the dress hunt. I think any of them could work and the high neckline/small norks combination can look so lovely.

BigFatBloomers · 21/08/2019 21:41

Anythin you like at Other Stories?
They do quite modern cuts at good prices.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 21/08/2019 21:53

Have you checked out the Reiss outlet? They have lovely things for glam evening wear. Normal prices are much too expensive but things are often hugely reduced and there are lots under £100.

EB100 · 21/08/2019 21:57

Chi chi is beautiful

Treem · 21/08/2019 21:58

OP have a look at Ted Baker. Top end of your budget but the quality of the dresses and the way they hang on your body are amazing. Also can re-sell on Ebay for a decent amount if you wait till out of stock.

BackforGood · 21/08/2019 22:03

I don't like the high necked one.

I really like the 2nd BooHoo one.
