What do you wear? I'm doing lots of going out in bars and clubs and, whilst I want to avoid looking like mutton dressed as lamb, I do want to look good. I've got one green dress and a couple of nice tops but I need more for all these nights out!

How do others dress at this age/stage?

Little black dresses never let me down

Faux leather skinnies - two pairs in different colours
Dark rinse skinnies
Black skinnies
Low heels (or converse, depending on venue/occasion)
Sparkly/printed top

☝️ The “mums night out” uniform 🤢

Themyscira · 15/08/2019 20:04

I am going out this weekend - I'm late 30s, single, 5'8" and a size 10/12. I plan on wearing a black bodycon dress with small gold dots all over, and gold sparkly wedges. The dress is short on me but has sleeves. I tend to wear dresses when I go out, and stick to the either legs out or arms out rule.

What's the mums night out uniform?

Sigh81 · 15/08/2019 20:07

Am mid 30s. 5ft7, size 8, hourglass (small waist, long legs, big thighs). I wear the following:

  1. pub, casual bar: high waisted denim pencil mid-calf skirt, knotted shirt at waist or cropped fitted jumper (to waist - no midriff showing!), flat or heeled brogues

  2. posh bar, theatre, opera: 50s cocktail dresses in silk or rayon crepe, draped 40s dresses, silk blouse and midi pencil skirt, heels.

  3. date/nice dinner: fitted, slightly off shoulder jersey long-sleeve pencil dresses, mid calf length. Heels or pointed flats.

All with natural (naturally curly and big) hair and makeup so I don't look too 50s bombshell or cartoony. But these shapes do all suit my figure and taste and I feel amazing in them.

@Sigh81 wow - those outfits sound amazing!

I've looked for a little black dress over the years but never seem to shop at the right time/season. I'm thinking a mini skirt and tights with ankle boots and a nice top? I'm tall with long legs and no boobs, size 12 on the bottom and 8-10 on top (although I swear that's vanity sizing and not my actual size). I can try on loads but things rarely look 'right' on me iyswim.

Often they are original/true vintage (try searching 50s cocktail dresses in etsy) but also House of Foxy does a Mansfield dress that never fails to get compliments from many, many strangers every time I wear it (but do size down if between sizes, it is very stretchy!)

I have it in both black and red.
