Tiny holes in front of T shirts driving me mad!

Hairydogmummy · 12/08/2019 15:20

Both me and my DS15 get tiny holes in the front of our t shirts towards the bottom. It's ruining virtually every top we both own. It's not just where it's a cheap fabric, it happens with everything even if really good quality and within a couple of weeks of having them. We both wear jeans a lot and I think it's the friction between the fabric and the fly of the jeans but what can we do? Anyone else get this and/or have a solution? Oddly it doesn't happen to anyone else in the family!

If it was moths or washing machines, the holes would be in random places. These are always on the front, near waist level.

Spinnaret · 12/08/2019 22:34

I have the same. Always in the same spot, around waistband height. And yes, mostly since we moved to a house with granite worktops. But, we also had a moth problem. But, as I am the only one whose clothes get eaten, I am not convinced the moths were to blame.

I have also started wearing an apron and got some of those holé button covers linked upthread. Since then, it seems to have stopped, so I am more convinced by it being the granite.

Bluejeantreefrog · 12/08/2019 22:43

We had these, sent us mad! Even washed everything bar bedding and towels in those delicate bags. Was convinced it was coming from the washer, maybe lost underwires from bras. Although majority was on front or sides, don't wear a belt. Could have cried when my favourite t shirt got one in. Got a new washer and doesn't seem to happen as much now.

Okay test it! I was sceptical a couple of years back and tested the theory.
Put an old t shirt on back to front ( so no holes)
Push up against worktop
Walk side to side applying slight pressure to the t shirt area
Remove and hold it up
Holes!

Hairydogmummy · 13/08/2019 07:58

I saw these @doodlejump1980 but wasn't sure they'd work cos the denim at the top of the fly seems to protrude more than the button itself but great if they do work. Will give them a try! Have also ordered elastic belt...3 quid off eBay!

I stopped wearing belts. No holes now. Or if I do, I do a French tuck. Definitely seems to have done the trick.

rodentforce · 13/08/2019 08:12

I remember another post on exactly this on Mumsnet a few years ago! As well as the belt/waistband suggestions, someone suggested that maybe when standing at the kitchen counter, you're resting your front against it? Which would grind the t shirt against the belt or waistband.

rodentforce · 13/08/2019 08:14

Oops, I see that I repeated what others have said ...

doodlejump1980 · 13/08/2019 08:39

@Hairydogmummy they really do work. I now have no holes in my tops. Saved me a fortune and you get 4 in a pack so can leave them on jeans etc and they go through the wash fine.

LunaTheCat · 13/08/2019 09:28

There are little gremlins that get into your t shirt draws at night. They know which is the front of your t shirt and nibble holes.
It is a conspiracy to drive humans mad .

jennymac · 13/08/2019 10:43

Definitely worktops. In our previous house my DHs tops were always covered in holes in the same area and mine were fine. The worktops in our new house are at a slightly different level and the exact reverse is happening. I have started tucking my tops into my trousers when in the kitchen. It can't be moths or anything to do with washing as it doesn't happen to my work clothes which I change out of as soon as I come home.

minipie · 13/08/2019 13:15

doodlejump1980 those look brilliant! Do they come off when you undo the button to go to the loo?

Hairydogmummy · 13/08/2019 19:06

Have ordered hold button covers, wearing a pinny and trying not to lean on worktops! Any ideas why is happening to DS15 tho? He can't be leaning on worktops as much as me??

There was a similar thread a few weeks ago and lots of people recommended the Holé button covers that @doodlejump1980 gave the link to.
I've just received a pack so am waiting to see if they help. @minipie they are quite hard to get on so don't come off when you undo your button or when in the wash. They make doing up the button quite hard until the button hold stretches a bit.
I so hope they work, I'm fed up with get holes, sometimes after only one wear! Definitely worktop/seat belt related I think.

Justkeeprollingalong · 13/08/2019 19:44

*hole not hold!

doodlejump1980 · 13/08/2019 19:59

@minipie nope they stay secure. They really are brilliant!

minipie · 13/08/2019 20:05

Ooh brilliant. I’m sold (and so is my mum who gets the same holes!)

minipie · 13/08/2019 20:08

I think most of my jeans buttonholes are quite stretched already (ahem) so hopefully should be able to get the button done up even with the holee on .

Is DS leaning on a desk/table, doing homework?

managedmis · 13/08/2019 20:41

Can someone provide a photo? I don't know what you all mean

spaniorita · 13/08/2019 20:45

My cats

Sooverthemill · 13/08/2019 20:50

icequeen snap! I now only let them on my lap when I'm in old pyjamas! Drove me insane looking for the answer. I do love my cats...

Justkeeprollingalong · 14/08/2019 08:30

@managedmis here are 2 White Company tops where it's happened. The holes are on the front just where the jean button is. I have darned the first lot which appeared after the first or second wear, before being washed (these tops are too expensive to throw away) but as you can see more have appeared.

I could show you many more! It's definitely the thinner, more delicate materials.
