Tiny holes in front of T shirts driving me mad!

Hairydogmummy · 12/08/2019 15:20

Both me and my DS15 get tiny holes in the front of our t shirts towards the bottom. It's ruining virtually every top we both own. It's not just where it's a cheap fabric, it happens with everything even if really good quality and within a couple of weeks of having them. We both wear jeans a lot and I think it's the friction between the fabric and the fly of the jeans but what can we do? Anyone else get this and/or have a solution? Oddly it doesn't happen to anyone else in the family!

It is the rubbing of the fabric when the button is pressed/rubbed along a counter top (kitchen counter by the sink for example). It grates the fabric between the button and the hard counter top. That is why the holes are always clustered around the belly button area of the t-shirt.

socksforfox · 12/08/2019 16:12

Sometimes those holes come from the washing machine itself

user1486915549 · 12/08/2019 16:25

I have this and worked out it came from trousers that had a metal button at the top of the zip.
I now won’t buy any trousers with a metal button
I have stuck a thick plaster over the metal button on my jeans !

shadyzadie123 · 12/08/2019 16:29

For me it's the combination of jean button/zip/belt buckle and then having the waist strap of a seat belt over the top. The material is constantly rubbing against the metal. A thin cotton t shirt stands no chance! I've found untucking my top so it's over the seat belt waist strap makes a huge difference.

minipie · 12/08/2019 16:35

I think for me it’s the fabric between jeans waistband and kitchen worktop.

It even happens to jumpers.

What I don’t understand is why it happens to t shirts now (in the last say 15-20 years) and didn’t happen to T shirts before that. Has cotton changed?

Fromage · 12/08/2019 16:48

No, you just do more cooking now. Grin

Troels · 12/08/2019 17:02

I have the same problem in the same place. Cheap tee shirts and some nicer quailty ones all the same. I never even thought of the seatbelt. I'll pull my shirt over the belt see if I can stop more.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 12/08/2019 17:11

I have cats, wear jeans and drive...and I have no idea what these holes you're on about are!

I'm currently in an old 2015 charity t shirt that I wear weekly. It's faded but there isn't a single hole?

FurrySlipperBoots · 12/08/2019 17:13

I reckon it's moths. I have the same problem! I've tried the anti moth stuff but it makes your clothes stink. Now I just go holey and try not to mind.

franke · 12/08/2019 17:17

I think it's the double whammy of jeans friction and leaning on kitchen worktops when cooking.

Tuck 'em in, it's the only way.

Hairydogmummy · 12/08/2019 17:25

Now I come to think of it, it's got much worse since we have the kitchen done...quartz worktops! And I do lean against them. The fabric stretchy belt idea is great...shall do that. Def think it must be the sticky up bit of the jeans where they fasten combined with seat belt/worktop. Just noticed my new top from oasis which is v thin to be fair, is peppered with them! I don't get it on tops I only wear with formal trousers for work or dresses or anything. I read online that you can get iron on lining to put on the back but think that would look v odd from the front. Surely you'd see it.

The worktop thing doesn't really explain it for DS ...he does help in kitchen but surely not enough...he must be doing something else that does it. He's not in a car as much as me either yet it happens to him just as much but never to DH. Maybe it's where he's resting his phone! Maybe a height thing with worktops.

I have this as well. It’s so annoying. I wondered if it was from the holes in the drum of the washing machine when the water is pumped out of the machine and the clothes are pulled against the holes. I wasn’t clever enough to wonder why they are always in the same place! Must be jean zips or belts or something.

onanothertrain · 12/08/2019 21:50

I get this and just presumed it was the zip on my jeans although the seat belt thing makes sense too. Definitely not moths!

Jammiebammie · 12/08/2019 21:52

Your not washing bras in the same load are you? I had a few wee holes in some of my tops and turns it dd was chucking her bras in and the hooks were catching.

piefacedClique · 12/08/2019 21:52

I think the hooks on my bras do it to mine in the machine 😭😭😭

There was a thread on here years ago, and we all decided it was the worktops. I started to wear an apron and haven't had a hole since.

doodlejump1980 · 12/08/2019 21:57

holebuttoncover.com/

This is what you need! I also suffered from holey tops. This has sorted it! You’re welcome!

georgialondon · 12/08/2019 22:01

It's often caused the the button on your jeans. It's so annoying but I just try to ignore the holes now as I'm always wearing jeans.

HeartZone · 12/08/2019 22:19

It’s definitely the quartz and granite worktops!
Wear an apron.
Or just don’t push / lean against the workbench.

LagoDiComo · 12/08/2019 22:22

Mine mainly appear at bust level. I do wash my bras with my tops

DippyAvocado · 12/08/2019 22:24

If it's mainly t-shirts I would say moths. DH's t-shirts are always eaten
by moths and it starts with tiny holes. His are generally round the collar though. Where are they stored? DH's are in a wardrobe whereas mine and the DCs are in drawers and they don't seem to get ours.

readitandwept · 12/08/2019 22:29

I don't have a quartz or granite worktop.

I have in the past put it down to tucking myself right in at my desk at work, but only every thought of this outside the office and never actually checked if that fits.

happyinherts · 12/08/2019 22:29

I'm not convinced it's any of the things mentioned. I don't drive. I don't have cats. I don't do a fantastic amount of cooking. I've work elasticated jeggings, no button, or fly and bras have gone in a net bag. A fairly new M&S T-shirt has this hole. Admittedly it hasn't happened for a while since this occurrence, so I'm a bit of a loss. Friction during wash possibly, but it's always in the same place. Just strange? It doesn't happen to the male of the species T shirts so much, does it?
