I’m in love with my new long swishy skirts

48 and never worn long skirts before. I always felt boring, matronly and like I should be running through a meadow or milking a cow. But I ADORE these two newbies, please show me your gems if you have any of the same ilk?

I want to buy a skirt! Do any of you ladies have my physique ( short legs, broad hips, okay but not brill waistline, not tall ) if so will a skirt suit me? What type?

Snooks1971 · 11/08/2019 20:03

Thanks for sharing your skirts ladies! Much obliged.
I’m looking at Eko Danger I love the red one although it’s more structured.
Also liking the Hush one despite me being usually drawn to prints.
Steel envious of your collection!
Fenella wow I’ve just looked at Kemi Telford. Thank you! Going to share her website with my SIL.

Bubble order a selection online or go shopping and give it a go! I have never worn long skirts or midi skirts in my entire 48 years but they can really work, I promise! Mine all sit on the narrowest point of my torso, my true waist - slightly above the belly button and the ones that are cleverly cut skim over the tummy area. I’ve got big boobs too and so always go for a fitted waist to give me definition.
I bought this one first a couple of months ago and dithered in the changing room unable to tell if I looked dowdy, brought it home, dithered again, showed DH expecting him to say a polite “it’s fine if you like it” Grin but he loved it and I’ve had lots of compliments since.
Hence me moving up to the next level with an asymmetric twist/tulip cut.

I’m in love with my new long swishy skirts

Fashion at the mo is perfect for the over-40s - impossible not to be comfortable, dignified and decent while you rock the latest threads.

I've got a welter of stuff from unlikely sources as a result - New Look does blinding crepe midi dresses, HM is excellent for pleated skirts, Monki does button-through skirts in cheery prints.

Whisper it, boohoo is good too. You have to be strict about your fabric - no thin viscose that melts in the wash - but that's it.

I am very excited if long skirts are really back in fashion again! I loved them in my late teens /early 20s. I am 5'3", short legs/long torso, nearly a perfect hourglass when I'm slim but definitely a pear when I'm overweight as I put it on my bum & legs. As I've aged (& post pregnancy) I have started to put more on my tummy as well though. I prefer trousers & skirts that sit at my natural waist, rather than low-rise, as they make my legs look longer.

I really suit the ankle length, heavy structured (aka winter weight) skirts. According to DH. I like lighter ones as well but I'm picky & I don't like ones that blow about in the wind & try to trip me up.

I still have a lovely winter skirt that I bought about 14 years ago for 50p in a charity shop. Brand new. Can't find a picture of it anywhere. It doesn't currently fit. Sad

I have the green Topshop one but in a kind of black and white animal print. I absolutely love it, it’s insanely comfortable

colourlessgreenidea · 12/08/2019 00:39

@Snooks1971, where is the grey v-neck t shirt from? It’s exactly what I’m looking for!

Snooks1971 · 12/08/2019 13:34

colour it’s £15 from Next, sorry am at work and can’t do links but if you search the item number 338-330 it will come up. It has a very subtle metallic pink thread running through it!

Thanks snooks I'm encouraged. I'm also loving the asymmetric cut ones, my toddlers are napping so I'm going to browse online now!

dontgobaconmyheart · 12/08/2019 14:10

Yes OP! Love that Topshop one! I live in this style too, I'm thrilled they're so in fashion and available to buy everywhere as it's such a comfortable and fashionable alternative to jeans.

Am a bit worried about how to make them work for A/W though, they seem to look best with trainers and a t-shirt. Adding a slouchy tucked sweater and boots is making me look a bit frumpy/hobo and I am not sure I can pull it off which has me vexed.

Snooks1971 · 12/08/2019 21:09

AwdBovril I know what you mean about the winter weight structured ones. I’d forgotten that 2 years ago I was wearing an M&S ankle length dark floral high-waisted number with black Vans hi-tops. So maybe I’m not as new to long skirts as I thought Blush
bacon I’m thinking heavy ankle biker style boots, slouchy socks. Would knee high socks be ok (can’t bear the thought of 60 denier opaques) or over the knee socks with a contrasting pattern/colour. Don’t want to look wacky though.
My cold top half though hmmm... boxy oversized cropped sweater with Uniqlo thermals underneath tucked in?

I like them in autumn with a fairly fitted turtleneck and ankle boots.

I got one from Walmart of all places, it's lovely, vertical stripes, with a tie through belt. Red, turquoise and orange stripes. Looks elegant.

CASCASCAS · 28/04/2020 13:33

I love pleated skirts and just ordered two of the cotton traders ones! Cant wait to try them. I got the whole outfit of the green one with the salmon colored cable jumper. Will be very lovely with white pumps.

And the chain one! with a blue top! Will look great with sling backs!

Deathraystare · 28/04/2020 14:57

FenellaMaxwell Oh wow love those dresses! Reminds me of all the African material shops I pass by and wish I could sew a dress/skirt from the materials!
