Hair dye patch test - turned brown?

I had a patch test done about an hour ago, and the dye has now turned an ugly dark brown on the skin behind my ear. Is that normal?

There hasn't been any itching or burning or anything else to suggest there's a problem, but my husband recoiled in horror when he saw it thinking I had developed a melanoma... Shock

Anyone else had this happen and it's all been fine? I'll call the salon when they reopen in the morning but would be good to know if my long awaited highlights are going to be canned!

Even when you put dye on your hair it turns darker as it develops. Sounds normal to me

Well that is reassuring to hear, thank you!

This has exactly happened to me today. I thought my hair patch test was red at first after it was done but then realised it was a lightish brown colour in the shape of the patch test. When you had the dye done was it fine in the end? I am worried I have had a weird reaction! Reassurance would be much appreciated! @WhatToTrot

Hi I’m a hairdresser. Oxidisation of the colour. Perfectly normal. The test is often carried out with a darker dye as this has the most chemicals in that you are likely to react to. If you react to this you’ll react to them all. As long as there’s no redness, swelling, bolstering or itching you are fine

@numberonecook thank you that was very helpful! The dye has washed away now as it has been 48 hours since I have had the patch test. There is a small red mark where the hair dye patch was? I have had no other reaction like itching or swelling, just a red mark. Is that normal? Shall I still go ahead with the hair dye? Thanks!!
