Why does my highlighted hair keep turning orange

Is it the quality of the product the hair dresser is using? It always looks great when done and once I start washing it myself it starts turning orange/brassy almost straight away. I've been using the purple shampoo which is meant to stop it. Was pregnant for the last few times getting my hair done, could it be hormones?

Hey, what brand of purple shampoo are you using, there can be a big difference.
I’m not sure it can be hormones as hair isn’t alive but it could be the bleach the hairdresser is using, some will bring out cooler tones more than others

DistantDream · 06/08/2019 10:02

I don't fully understand but when you strip your hair of colour, it is a warm blonde/brassy (depending on your hair). The toner puts the colour back in and therefore the toner will not last forever. Once it fades out, like normal dye, you will be left with the colour of your stripped back hair.

It shouldn't be fading out after a couple of washes though. My blonde lasts about 4weeks with purple shampoo.

Use Loreal Professuonal from Look Fantastic. Silver bottle. Works v well indeed on yellow blond. I used it to keep my hair platinum.

JamesonCask · 06/08/2019 10:42

I use the L'oreal purple shampoo

I think it’s the toner getting washed out too quickly, if it’s fading straight away then go back to your salon!

This happens to me, I get a root smudged painted on at the same visit. I washed my hair the evening of the salon visit to remove the residual dye off of my scalp but ended up slightly rinsing away the toner too

browzingss · 06/08/2019 10:48

Also you might benefit from another round of highlights to get rid of your slightly orange base colour.

JamesonCask · 08/08/2019 12:47

Sorry for delayed responses. Its someone who comes to my home rather than me going to a salon. I've mentioned it a few times to her and she keeps saying just use purple shampoo but im not seeing any results.

Would it be worth putting a toner in myself or should I go to someone else

I think I'd go elsewhere for a second opinion.

Notanotheruser111 · 08/08/2019 23:50

How long are you putting the purple shampoo in for? Also have you tried putting it on dry hair?

Titsywoo · 08/08/2019 23:53

Does she use a toner? How long does she leave it on for?

ZazieTheCat · 08/08/2019 23:57

Josh Wood Shade Shot Plus from Boots. But agree with PP re second opinion.

JamesonCask · 09/08/2019 03:37

Leaving the purple shampoo on for about 5 min. Never heard of using it on dry hair I can try that.

She used toner the last time, she left it on about 5 mins I think.

Do not put the purple shampoo on dry hair!!! It will stain, and any areas with damage will absorb all the colour!!

Matrix purple mask is amazing. If you want silver tones in your hair use the makki conditioning colour, but dilute it with white conditioner.

Fudge do a pre- blowdry spray, that is also purple. That's good too.

It could be your hair doesn't accept the brand the hairdresser is using. My hair doesn't behave well with matrix, which in my opinion... Sucks anyway.

Ask the hairdresser to double tone. So bleach, rinse, tone, rinse, tone. It will stay longer, 100%.

Notanotheruser111 · 09/08/2019 10:50

Ive never had purple shampoo stain on dry hair, my hairdresser actually recommended it. Perhaps it is hair dependent.

browzingss · 09/08/2019 11:29

Purple shampoo will stain damaged hair, especially when applied on dry hair

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 09/08/2019 13:34

@ZazieTheCat can you use the Shade Shot Plus alone as a toner? The advice on Boots site is to mix it with one of the colouring products.

dementedpixie · 09/08/2019 13:38

I don't think she is bleaching it for long enough. If it isn't light enough in the first place then no amount of purple shampoo will help

MoBro · 09/08/2019 14:15

If she’s leaving with a clean result then it is lifted enough with the pre lightener. I’d toner is left on approximately 5 mins, then typically it will last 5 washes. (That is very general). A toner is semi permanent always and if you’re not going back monthly then you need to really look at the home products you are using to maintain this result for a little longesr between appointments. I’ll post a useful pic of products I use in salon and a useful guide to when they’re needed. But this is not really a problem with application, it’s simply how excessive warmth in hair will always return, particularly during warmer months and the right consultation and client expectations to be managed on the onset.

Very useful

@LifeInAHamsterWheel I’ve used it as a stand-alone and I was fine.

ZazieTheCat · 09/08/2019 16:48

@LifeInAHamsterWheel I just mixed it with white conditioner. Although they did change the system a bit recently.

I‘Ve just had another look at the Josh Wood site and they have a new product- Shade Shot Gloss. Maybe that’s what to use as a stand alone?

They just used to do one product that you could either use alongside dye or mixed with a mask/conditioner. The mask they sold to be used with it was quite expensive (although multi-use) so I think people complained and so they’ve brought out a pre-mixed one.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 09/08/2019 23:22

Thanks @ZazieTheCat 👍🏻

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 10/08/2019 08:51

When i dyed my hair myself this used to happen but now I go to the hairdressers it doesn’t and the colour stays true to my next visit. I would change hairdressers
