Skirts in winter

Hi all, I am getting tired of wearing the same old skinny jeans and boots in winter. But I have to admit they’re practical, and I can’t think of many alternatives.

Im slim, average height,,forties. My style is rural-ish (I wear dubarry boots, padded gilet’s....Blush with a bit of Toast (the brand) thrown in.

How to get rid of the skinnies and replace with skirts without looking like a prize penis in all of my other stuff? Black tights with brown boots???

I so confused.
I don’t drive either so need to wear water[roofs a lot and have this idea that if I ditch the jeans I’m gonna look mismatched and soaked.

Is this possible? Any ideas?
Thanks :)

Totally double. Skirts look great with boots. Nothing wrong with black tights and brown boots but I think a black skirt might look a little odd.

Just try a few and see how you get on! If you’re used to skinny jeans you probably wear loose tops to balance them out. Try a french tuck so you have a waist of the skirts aren’t fitted.

Denim skirts are great and there is one out there to suit you. Length depends a bit on length of your coat/jacket.

Department store near you where you can try on loads? I think marks 100 denier tights are just as warm as skinny jeans.
In the summer have you tried waterproof ankle boots? Look less wintery but still good.

Thanks onekid!

I do actually wear tops that go with skirts - I never did the baggy top/jumper thing with skinny jeans, more fitted jersey, neat wool, etc so these would be easy to team with skirts.

I like muted, scandal type colours - navy, grey, white, sometimes dusky blue/terracotta.

Will compile a few inspiration pics and see if anyone can tell me if they’ll translate to wet, Cumbrian uk weather!

Great advice❤️

Is something like this too old for you? www.whitestuff.com/womens/skirts/seed-pod-chartreuse-plain-talent-baby-cord-skirt/

Or you could go for other trousers if you’re not convinced by a skirt? The uniqlo velvet trouser are lovely and very warm.

Onekidnoclue · 04/08/2019 15:16

Pictures are good.
These are the uniqlo trousers they’ll be back in in autumn. www.uniqlo.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-GB-Site/en_GB/Product-Variation?pid=402688&dwvar_402688_color=COL78 Skirts aren’t the only way to mix it up Wink

Here are the inspiration pics, shapes and colours relevant but perhaps a tad less ‘arty’.

Thanks onekid, i’d Love the skirt if shorter. I do seem to suit Aline or slightly flared silhouettes. Cord is a good idea.
Can’t get along with trousers either!

Thanks for taking the time to look.

I think I need to ask how do you style,a skirt with rainwear?

Search results are too dressy, but a lot of cos and toast images are half way there.

I have similar winter dilemmas as I’m rural coastal. Anything I wear has to look ok with a waterproof

Musicforsnorks · 04/08/2019 16:43

Any skinnies go with everything, rain or shine,,don’t they?

It’s annoying.
I mean I’m ok with them on other people but I feel self conscious in them as I prefer less baggy, shorter tops. Same with leggings, they’re ok until I Have to take my coat off, and then I am not as comfy, psychologically.

My "rural" wardrobe included a few skirts like this (not necessarily this colour, although I love it). Just googled "cord skirts" and loads came up. And brown (Dubarry type) boots are practically a neutral aren't they?

One of the many, many things I don't miss about living in the country is the proliferation of sludge green clothing Grin

I wear skirts and dresses in winter with dark tights and black lace up ankle boots
I’ve mostly nicked my daughters boots from Urban outfitters which serves her right tbh

StCharlotte · 04/08/2019 17:31

This just came up - they might have something? And you can get tights in every colour these days.

Stcharlotte - I really don’t suit the green tweed look, so I’m safe there!
I love the colour of that skirt though, am taking a closer look. There wa as pinkish cord skirt at cos last year in the sales but I missed it.

Ah, pagwatch I love a lace up boot. I would like some in burgundy/brown but not sure what tights would go with them.

Just tried dubarry boots with my navy shortish skirts and actually looked ok😀

I have these green no-brand short wellies too, which are great. Tried them with my wax jacket and a dress and looked like Vera ! 😁

What do you all do in a downpour, coat-wise?

In winter I will still be wearing my skinnies with jumpers & trainers; but I've bought some winter skirts too to wear with boots & opaque tights.

I've got a wine coloured cord mini & a checked mini from New Look. Also some short flowery dresses & checked fitted pinafores with long sleeved tops to wear under them. From high street shops such as Dorothy Perkins, River Island, Primark etc.

I've got brown flat knee high boots & flat black OTK boots but really need new ankle boots preferably in black & in grey.

I have my coats sorted as bought 2 new coats last year, 1 of them is waterproof.

tierraJ · 04/08/2019 19:16

OP my waterproof is by Alesha Dixon X Regatta it's a knee length navy parka which has survived several downpours so far & kept me very snug.

Branster · 04/08/2019 19:26

Shorter skirts with fine cable knit tights (you can find a few designs come autumn in muted colours in greys, browns, olive green dusty purple) with knee boots would keep you warm and make a change from jeans. Wear with a warm short jacket - emphasise waist line just skimming the bottom.
