Help! Mother of the groom

My son gets married next June so I need to start thinking about my outfit. I don't really do fashion & certainly not dresses - smart to me is a clean pair of jodhpurs! So I've no idea where to start. I'm 60, 5'2 and size 14. Buying shoes is enough to drive me to tears - wise feet, high instep and low ankle bones. Please point me in some suitable directions.

m mother of the bride next July. I have dark, formal work clothes, the odd ancient ball gown and dog walking clothes.

I have decided that it is more important that I smile and am pleasant than truly glamorous. Nobody really remembers what anyone wears - even the brides dress is quickly forgotten by everyone apart from her mother and herself.
I’ve almost settled on a bombshell dress as they often have a bit of stretch and are well made and flattering. Something like this -

I’ll just do mid heel courts in a shade to match my hat - colour scheme not yet decided. I don’t want the whole dress and coat look as it feels too restrictive for me. I’m taking flats for the Ceilidh though.

Try personal shopping at John Lewis, I did it recently with my mum for an anniversary party and it was fab, they listen to you and get the stuff off the rails and let you try on as much as you like; they'd also help with shoes and a bag. Plenty of time though for June next year.
Or will the bride be able to go with you?

Kummerspeck · 02/08/2019 20:56

Before DD got married I had said I didn't want to do the traditional mother of the bride outfit until one of my friends pointed out that you don't often get the chance to wear something like that.
I did the traditional dress, jacket and hat which was so unlike my normal scruff! I felt a million dollars and got loads of compliments

I'm MOTG this November and have lost 2 stone in honour of the occasion and now feel I at least have more choice. Trouble is I can't choose! I'll keep on eye on this thread!

That Bombshell dress is amazing, @CherryPavlova. There was a thread recently where the OP was attending a Parisien wedding and wanted to look stylish. She plumped for that dress, in black I think, and reported she felt like a million dollars. That would be my pick.

CherryPavlova · 02/08/2019 22:58

Myimaginarycathasfleas It is rather nice isn’t it? I wouldn’t want black even with brighter accessories because I wear black or navy every day for work. I have green eyes so like greens generally. I’m just wanting to wait in the hope a stone falls off. Luckily most of their ranges are fairly enduring and around for a while.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 02/08/2019 23:11

I prefer the green too. Unfortunately I can't think of an occasion that would warrant me buying one!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 02/08/2019 23:41

I'm stepmother of the bride soon and I've booked a John Lewis appt, good to hear they are worth it!

NaturalBornWoman · 03/08/2019 06:28

The Bombshell dress is fab! I did not want to go down the typical MOB dress and coat route either when my daughter got married so I went for a lovely dress and had a hat made. Still very happy with my choices when I look back. Some of those outfits marketed at MOBs are very frumpy.

How well do you get on with future DIL? I'd be tempted to ask her what colour she might like to see me in and whether she fancied a lunch and shopping trip?

countrygirl99 · 03/08/2019 07:05

Future DIL is lovely and completely unbridezilla thank goodness. Her response would be whatever I feel comfortable wearing ( not sure realises that would mean jogpants😄). The bombshell dress is lovely but definitely not me. I will probably head off to a big city with to get some ideas but I'm not sure whether to go to London or Birmingham.

How about a trouser suit or a jumpsuit?

Sammy867 · 03/08/2019 09:29

I told my mum and mil the colour scheme and they both chose a dress in that scheme. (Purple) MIL chose a darker purple evening dress and my mum chose lilac colours. It was an October wedding so they both had on an evening cardigan as well and I thought it looked really nice on the photos like the families were truly together. Mil was wearing flat ballet style shoes and mum was wearing heels both chose an a line dress, mums midi and mil slightly shorter
