Hi all, does anyone have any recommendations for a rucksack for my DS who is starting school in September?

Sorry, I'm not sure why this has ended up in Style & Beauty!

Most schools use logoed book bags

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 01/08/2019 17:11

Just send him with a bookbag, a rucksack is unnecessary for Reception age children.

shellysheridan · 01/08/2019 17:19

Most schools prefer book bags as they fit in the children's drawers

Youngandfree · 01/08/2019 17:22

@Bridget4 are you in the uk?

PlugUgly1980 · 01/08/2019 17:33

Have you checked with school, ours doesn't allow rucksacks due to lack of space, only school book bags.

MammaMia19 · 01/08/2019 17:34

It’s all Smiggle here! Look online for discounts.

Only book bag and drawstring bag for PE here. Got no room for 30 bags check OP.

popehilarious · 01/08/2019 17:40

Can they bring a change of clothes in case of accidents - I'd want a small rucksack for that? We have to bring in fruit too.

dementedpixie · 01/08/2019 17:43

Our school never had a book bag or drawers. My 2 used small backpacks. At that age they had character ones

dementedpixie · 01/08/2019 17:44

And their pe kit went in the backpack along with their water bottle and snack

MyOtherProfile · 01/08/2019 17:51

If you think your child might need a change of clothes you could always send them in at the start of the year in a carrier bag.

Bridget4 · 01/08/2019 18:59

Thanks everyone. Yes, I'm in the UK. There is a separate book bag we need to get but we've also been asked to bring a water bottle each day and they need to have a change of clothes and also change for PE. So I thought a small rucksack might be best. I'd quite like him to carry it as I'll have my own stuff plus bag for younger child.

A squashy drawstring bag was all ours had in addition to a book bag for reception. Due to lack of space. That can be carried on child’s back if you tie strings shorter. Change of clothes might end up being kept at school, ditto PE kit. You might be better getting a water bottle with a loop/carabiner clip type thing to attach to handle of bookbag.

Mumof1andacat · 01/08/2019 19:07

Pe bag is kept at school and the water bottle should just fit in the book bag. What's the change of clothes for? Can that not be kept on the peg same as the pe bag?

spiralflower · 01/08/2019 19:19

All reception children here have small backpacks! They need to take in water and a snack for break time, plus spare clothes just in case and PE kit. They have separate book bags.

A lot of children have character ones which you can get in many places. I like the Skip Hop animal backpacks.

SheilaHammond · 01/08/2019 20:21

Please get a drawstring bag for PE kit...they hang down below the pegs do there's room for coats on top. Rucksacks are often too wide to fit between coat pegs, meaning no room for the child on either side. Change of clothes goes in PE bag.

herecomesthsun · 01/08/2019 20:30

My son had a logo-ed school book-bag in Reception. When it fell apart, we looked to buy a school rucksack, as they had just produced some, but there were none left when I went to buy.

So I got him a Berghaus one in the sale, half price. (I took the line with him that it was much cooler than the school one). It has lasted 5 or 6 years now, and looks great. He is very proud of it .

Mind you, it would have been a bit big for him in reception Smile

dementedpixie · 01/08/2019 20:35

Ours take their bags into the classroom, they arent left on pegs. PE kit goes in the backpack and isn't left at school

shellysheridan · 01/08/2019 20:57

I would attach the water bottle to the bag or buy one with an attached pouch. If it spills in the bag or rucksack it would be a pain!
