Sunglasses-do you choose cheap and replace often, or expensive?

I have always gone for a couple of pairs of cheaply Primark, New Look or DP sunglasses each summer and replace them when they get scratched but have been eyeing up the Raybans on TKMaxx which look lovely! I am unsure if it’ll be an expensive mistake though??

What do you do?

Buy less expensive and have multiple pairs

ShutTheFridgeUp · 30/07/2019 10:32

I go for cheap primark every year, but do have lovely prescription sunglasses for driving.
I lose so many that I refuse to spend more than a few quid on a pair.

HoneyWheeler · 30/07/2019 10:32

I have to wear prescription sunnies so they always work out quite costly, and I only have one pair on the go at a time. It was a hard adjustment at first, but a) they scratch way less and b) after a while you just get in the habit of putting them back in the case and looking after them - in my experience anyway! I chose quite a big classic frame so I haven't gotten sick of them yet!

BrillyPribble · 30/07/2019 10:33

Cheap here. I have many many pairs scattered throughout the house/car/office - they are an absolute essential for me most of the year round as my eyes are very light sensitive.
I rarely pay over £10 for them and they last reasonably well.

I go for Next/Accessorise etc not so cheap they fall apart....but cheap enough if I lose them or break then I won't mind. -- I also have prescription ones for when I'm not wearing contacts and tend to go for cheapish frames for the same reason. Funnily enough I don't tend to break or lose them though....

Youngandfree · 30/07/2019 10:33

I have one expensive pair that I look after and replace when they break. Current pair has been going strong for 2 and a half years!

MarthasGinYard · 30/07/2019 10:34

Not expensive

Normally RB

Have had current pair 4 years

I like a classic Smile

Bluntness100 · 30/07/2019 10:35

Expensive. It's the lenses. On expensive ones you can even wear them indoors, not that you'd want to, there is no colour distortion. On cheap ones the lenses are shite, and usually turn everything the same colour as the lens.

itbemay1 · 30/07/2019 10:36

I buy mine from tk maxx as they're normally good quality for a fraction of the cost and I'm crap with glasses, lose them, sit on them but surprisingly my current ones have lasted for 2 summers so far!

BusyEvenForBee · 30/07/2019 10:39

Expensive. After certain age I prefer to have quality accessories.

MarthasGinYard · 30/07/2019 10:41

I've also still got RB Aviators from 1996

Still wear those too.

RainOrSun · 30/07/2019 10:43

I used to be a cheepy pair, and replace frequently sort of girl, and then I snapped a frame while miles from and shop, so borrowed DHs raybans (he wasnt wearing contacts at the time, so had a plain pair hanging round while he wore prescription ones), and omg, I'm converted. So much more comfortable- both for my eyes, and in terms of the actual frame on my face, and not broken in 2 years, unlike my normal purchases when last a few months - we lived somewhere bright and sunny, sunglasses were worn approx 10 months of the year.
So, id say buy a decent pair.

mummywingingit · 30/07/2019 10:43

Mine are pricey as I have no choice but to have prescription sunglasses...if I had the choice though, I would get a nice pair of sunglasses like RayBans or something as I like them and they look smart! My husband has Oakley's as he plays sport, and he says he can definitely tell the difference between cheap and more expensive as they are better quality.
Your eyes are so important to look after, so as long as they protect from the UV adequately, then go with what you prefer I guess...not much help...

SeeSomethingSaySomething · 30/07/2019 10:45

Expensive.

It’s the protection from UV damage that’s most important to me so good quality UV blocking lenses are essential.

The bonus is they last for years so are ultimately cheaper too.

overnightangel · 30/07/2019 10:47

My £4 pair from Asda lasted me all summer last year, can’t really justify spending a fortune on sunglasses when you live in Cumbria to be fair!

TheFlis12345 · 30/07/2019 10:49

Expensive, they last years and the price means I go to extra effort to look after them. My last pair were Prada and lasted a good 6 years. I wear them all year round as I have very sensitive eyes so I bet cost per wear is less than the average cheap pair people but. Current pair are eye wateringly expensive Tom Ford but still look brand new after 15 months. My only exception is a pair of cheaper ones that I use if we’re going to the beach and likely to leave our bags unattended while we’re in the sea.

slipperyeel · 30/07/2019 10:49

I bought a pair of Chanel sunglasses as a treat in 2000 and I still have them, amazing that I haven’t lost them to be honest.
Raybans will NEVER go out of style, I’d go for it.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 30/07/2019 10:52

I spent €20 on a pair 11 years ago and they're still going strong.

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 30/07/2019 10:53

Raybans - I love them. Have had them for several years and still going strong, but I do look after my stuff and alternate with wearing prescription glasses.

bingoitsadingo · 30/07/2019 10:53

I have a couple of pairs - a nice, reasonably expensive but not £££ pair and a cheaper pair that I use for outdoorsy/rougher stuff

I keep them in little fabric bags so they don't get too scratched and I don't tend to lose them so this works for me.

ladyratterley · 30/07/2019 10:59

I have a Dior pair I've had for 9 years & I LOVE them. I get a lot of compliments on them. But I also have some cheapie ones from Primark for going in the pool or sea on holiday.
So my advice is really quite unhelpful - do both! If I think about it as cost per wear the expensive pair were totally worth it.

kunderscorej · 30/07/2019 11:07

Pay a little bit more and they really do last much longer. I've had a pair of raybans for over 10 years.
Polaroid sunglasses are really good quality for the price. They are sometimes in TKmaxx. I've got 2 pairs, one is 5 years old now and still in good shape.

fedup21 · 30/07/2019 11:09

The Raybans I’m looking at in TKMaxx are £79-is that a decent price??

OP posts:
MarthasGinYard · 30/07/2019 11:10

What model are they Op

If you like them I'd grab them whilst they are in
