Sunglasses-do you choose cheap and replace often, or expensive?

I have always gone for a couple of pairs of cheaply Primark, New Look or DP sunglasses each summer and replace them when they get scratched but have been eyeing up the Raybans on TKMaxx which look lovely! I am unsure if it’ll be an expensive mistake though??

What do you do?

I get the best glasses with Polaroid effect & anti glare effect. Whether the brand is good or unknown is less important. My cheapest glasses are around £75. My eyes are very sensitive to light so it's totally worth the money. Also good quality sunglasses prevent squinting, UV effects & wrinkling near the eyes. Better get good ones & replace less often.

trixymalixy · 30/07/2019 11:17

I do both. I have loads of cheap primark pairs that are just chucked in bags so I have a pair when i need them and it doesn't matter if they get scratched.

I also have several expensive pairs from tkmaxx, for best.

SushiTime · 30/07/2019 11:19

I have 5 pairs.

A cheap pair that live in the car.

A cheap pair that live in my kitchen (for the garden)

Then I have a Chanel pair, a Tom Ford paid and some Porsche design ones. I look after these so well and I think the Chanel paid must be 11 years old now, TF 5 and PD Probs 3. All bought as presents but I think they are so worth it. They really complete an outfit.

ExpletiveDelighted · 30/07/2019 11:20

I get cheapish ones (usually Boots with my advantage points) because I'm constantly flipping them up on top of my head when the sun goes in which you're not supposed to do with good glasses.

Ninkaninus · 30/07/2019 11:20

I usually buy cheap - M&S/Boots. Sunglasses end up at the bottom of my bag and never stay in mint condition for very long.

But I’ve just bought what I consider to be an expensive pair - £55 in the sale, from Whistles. If I manage to look after them well then I will probably buy a designer pair next year.

avalanching · 30/07/2019 11:20

I have Rayban's, 3 different styles which I've bought over the last 6 years or so, they don't go out of fashion. Their style suits me better, and I don't replicas, if I want a clubmaster shape I want Ray Ban's. Also, never buy knock off sunglasses, I'm assuming someone else may have mentioned to the safety issues.

notso · 30/07/2019 11:44

I'm sure I've read the majority of sunglasses made by the same company and the mark ups on the branded ones are huge.
My favourite pair cost £3, they are the only ones that actually block out the sun as oppose to the fashion ones which do nothing.

RubHimSweetly · 30/07/2019 11:55

I bought a pair of very expensive Prada sunglasses 3 summers ago, during a ‘fuck-it’ moment at the airport. Still going strong!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 30/07/2019 11:58

I have heap of sunnies as I live in Oz. i have 2 pairs of prescription ones from Specsavers, dozens of cheapies that I pick up everywhere for under $20 to keep in every bag. Also a couple of pairs of Dior ones that I love the best, but are really no better than my Specsavers ones. When I have visitors from the U.K. I tell them to buy the biggest darkest glasses they can as the bright sunlight here can makes your eyes water like mad if you aren’t used to it. My husband swears by his Oakleys, but I reckon expensive sunnies are a bit of a scam. I still buy them though!

HundredMilesAnHour · 30/07/2019 11:59

I always buy good quality sunglasses (so top quality lenses), so that's expensive! But I look after them so they last for years and years. My favourites are from Mykita - their frames are handmade and their lenses are top top quality - and they don't have any logos let alone flashy ones. It's all about the quality for me.

Last time I bought cheap sunglasses was about 20 years ago, and they didn't last longer than a year.

SinglePringle · 30/07/2019 12:00

If I buy cheap, I lose them.

I’ve got a pair of £200 Jimmy Choo glasses that are 10 years old, Tom Ford (£150 second hand) that are 5 years old, Prada of a similar price & they’re 3 years old, Gucci a year old £250. I keep them all in their cases and know where they are at all times!

I never leave the house without a pair.

JenniR29 · 30/07/2019 12:03

I wear prescription ones so expensive for me but if I didn’t need that I would go for much cheaper.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 30/07/2019 12:57

Expensive. I have one pair: Prada — cos the Devil wears it Grin

I look after them exceptionally well and they will last me for years.

FizzBuzzBangWoof · 30/07/2019 12:59

I go for cheap (usually less than £25, usually TKMaxx)

I just wouldn't trust myself not to lose them or damage them!

Justabadwife · 30/07/2019 13:04

The last pair I bought were £3 from primark cos I was desperate. They have lasted 2 years so far and I wear them most days.

BusySittingDown · 30/07/2019 13:47

I got tired of replacing my sunglasses every year. I do NOT suit sunglasses, they make me look like a grasshopper so it takes me ages to find some that look ok.

DH was buying Raybans a couple of years ago and they were buy one get one half price in Specsavers so I took advantage of the half price pair Grin. They're still going strong!

ElPontifico · 30/07/2019 14:00

I used to buy cheap (Boots own brand), but recently bought a pair of Ray Bans at about 4 or 5 times the price and I am totally converted.

I bought the RBs because they looked more expensive - and they really do. I'm shallow like that. But actually the lens quality is miles better as well.

I'm sure I've heard that both cheapo sunglasses and expensive designer ones may have crappy lenses - cost in itself is no guarantee of quality lenses. But my RB ones really are good.

perhapstomorrow · 30/07/2019 14:03

I've got a pair of 10 year old Ray-Bans. I love them.

unicorncupcake · 30/07/2019 14:10

I used to have cheap ones I replaced every year, but had some expensive Ralph Lauren ones that I had for 5 years and I’ve just bought some replacement ones from John Lewis (£50 so mid range) as the RL ones were really scratched from me dropping them in my bag and not putting them in the case. I got loads of compliments with the RL ones, and I wear sunglasses all year round, as I hate driving with the sun in my eyes or sitting outside without them so I definitely got my money’s worth!

TheRLodger · 30/07/2019 14:12

I would love to have a more expensive pair. But I’m forever losing sunglasses so I buy cheap ones or more recently purposely brought magazines which had sunglasses as a freebie in them

666onmyhead · 30/07/2019 14:14

Both. Keep a few cheap but efficient ones in the cars and have a couple of cherished ones in my handbag,to go with the outfit I have on that day.

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 30/07/2019 14:27

Expensive - better for your eyes in every sense. Cheap lenses distort vision and strain your eyes. Don't provide adequate protection from the sun either.

Expensive ones tend to come with a more sturdy case so if you look after them well last longer.

AuntieMarys · 30/07/2019 14:30

Raybans prescription sunglasses here...I have 2 pairs. Wear them almost every day.

Propertyofhood · 30/07/2019 14:32

I'm sure I've read the majority of sunglasses made by the same company and the mark ups on the branded ones are huge.

Of course it is, it's the same as most 'branded' goods, you are largely paying for the name and perhaps a small amount of better quality.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 30/07/2019 14:33

I was always a cheap sunglasses person and never fancied an expensive pair because I didn't really look after the ones I had.

I bought some folding RayBan wayfarers last year though and I love them. Because they fold down I feel like I'm less likely to damage them in my bag as well.
