Hello all

Asking for my mum.

Can anyone recommend shops for MOB outfits please? She lives in Central London.

She visited one just off Oxford Street but all the outfits were really fuddy duddy.

I came on here a few months ago regarding my wedding dress and got amazing advice about a shop called Wed2be. We are hoping that we'll get some more great recommendations for her now.

Hope you can help!

How formal is the wedding? I wore a purple swing dress from Debenhams for DD wedding.

Margofthebride · 27/07/2019 18:20

Thanks goose

It's pretty informal, but she wants to dress up. It's in a hotel for the whole day, a winter wedding.

Phase Eight have nice posh dresses and jackets usually.

MoltonSilver · 28/07/2019 01:48

Hey bombshell london.

MoltonSilver · 28/07/2019 01:49

Try, not get.

MoltonSilver · 28/07/2019 01:49

Try, not hey. Stupid autocorrect.

Depending on how long it is before the wedding, and I suppose my financial perspective may well not be your mother's, a good trawl through ebay is always worthwhile. I've seen so many gorgeous outfits there at miniscule prices she should keep a parallel search up with new/previously owned outfits.

SeaEagle21 · 28/07/2019 02:52

I'd steer clear of "Mother of the Bride" shops. They always have dowdy outfits. She'd be better off going to her favorite upmarket shop and just trying things on.

Margofthebride · 30/07/2019 07:52

Thanks all, sorry for mot replying before, been a busy time. I will check out your suggestions Smile

John Lewis as recommended above can be a bit hit and miss. I wanted a formal outfit so went for the personal shopper service. It was all a bit disjointed and I was sold a brand I later found out specialised in plus sized mother of the bride outfits. It buried me - I was 10st and a size 10 at the time. I was also urged to consider a dress from the petite range -I am 5’10” .
I returned the stuff and bought elsewhere.

If it was my son's wedding, I would start by trying this bombshell dress which I've been obsessing over since a thread a couple of months ago.

If that didn't work out I'd go to Vivienne Westwood (and bugger his inheritance).

ladyratterley · 30/07/2019 11:06

My mum bought this Phase Eight dress for my wedding.
They have some gorgeous stuff. She also got a matching jacket.

They have good stand alone shop just off Oxford Street.

Margofthebride · 30/07/2019 11:06

Wow yeah that bombshell dress is fabulous in a really understated way. Have had a look at the website and this is just the type of thing my mum is into. Have sent her the link.

That phase eight dress is gorgeous. I suggested Coast and Phase Eight but I think she is worried someone else will turn up wearing the same thing

a good stand alone shop just off Oxford Street (ie not a concession). Smile

ladyratterley · 30/07/2019 11:10

I guess that's the risk you run shopping in High Street shops.
My mum found the specialist MOB type shops frumpy. And she's 70! Grin

Margofthebride · 30/07/2019 11:14

Ladyratterley - same with my mum. she's 70 and is finding MOH shops rather insulting in their frumpiness!!!

There is a place called After Dark specialising in Evening wear. The ladies evening wear is located in Finchley, they have amazing stuff sizes 4-18. On another location they have cocktail dresses, I think that is in Stanmore. Check the website. It is worth going in there. It has dresses for all shapes and the owner is extremely knowledgeable and understands what works. Dresses there are for all budgets as well.

Busy thank I have forwarded the link to my mum. I do think the Bombshell place is more her style, she's getting quite excited about the stuff on there

No problem. I can guarantee she won't leave the store empty handed...My first time there was only 'to have a look'... Grin left with a fantastic dress. And there were a few Mothers of the Bride there which couldn't even chose through all the options. Fully recommend a visit.

BusyEvenForBee · 30/07/2019 11:31

But Bombshell is a beautiful dress! Have fantastic wedding! Flowers
