Covering patch of white hair

I really want to do something interesting with my hair. I was thinking highlights or balayage. However I have two small patches of hair that are completely white. One is on my parting and one is at the front to the side, so very visible when my hair is up. At the moment I'm applying a permanent box dye every six weeks but need to cover up with a root crayon after a couple of weeks as it just doesn't stick. Is it pointless to get something done professionally if I'm going to be stuck with the same old greys almost immediately anyway? I'm 30 so not ready to accept it and leave it as it is just yet!
