Summer city break

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/07/2019 10:04

I think I know what I'm taking but thought it might be nice to see other people's thoughts too.

Hot city break which will involve a mixture of sightseeing, chilling in beer gardens, trips out to lakes, more chilling in beer gardens etc.

Levi's denim shorts
Black shorts
Variety of very thin white cotton tops
Couple of jumpsuits
Denim skirt
Black sundress
And then a variety of black dresses and jumpsuits for evening
All to be worn with Stan Smiths, black squidgy Clarks trainers or gold Havianas

I could do with a couple more tops but can't find anything I like.

Thoughts?

Any chance you might go into a church? Just make sure you have something which covers your shoulders.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/07/2019 10:11

Thanks. Unlikely on this trip tbh. Some of the white tops have short sleeves though so would be okay (not loving the tops of my arms anymore!).

Depends where you are going. I can't wear denim in the heat.

notasgreenasiamcabbagelooking · 24/07/2019 11:27

Depending on where you're going I might change change the Clarks trainers to a pair of sandals. I live in a city which people visit for a city break in Spain and the locals would never wear flip flops (they're for the beach/lake or pool only). I imagine the same is true in Italy.

onanothertrain · 24/07/2019 11:36

That's a lot of black! I would only take 1 pair of trainers and a pair of sandals. Not sure about a denim skirt in the heat. I do a lot of city breaks and rarely go back to change for going out at night.
How long are you going for?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/07/2019 15:16

I like black!

The Clarks are actually sandals not trainers- I clearly need a holiday!

The denim skirt is a very lightweight denim. I'm wearing it today and it's quite cool and comfortable.

We definitely change for dinner- not to 'dress up' but definitely to freshen up.

Not sure where Italy came from- not going to Italy!

Flip flops are for lake days - I hate wearing flip flops for proper walking.

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie which Clarks sandals do you have? I'm also looking for a comfy pair to take on holiday.

Do you wear any floaty maxi dresses those would be good in the heat. Incase it rains maybe a pac a mac.

Mentounasc · 25/07/2019 07:46

Hi Remus, the combo of sightseeing, beer gardens and lakes suggests Munich and surroundings. Am I getting warm (well I am but that's the heatwave)?

If so, the Münchner are definitely more style conscious than the Berliners, but that's not difficult.

How short are the two pairs of shorts? If both are bum-skimmers, might it be better to take one instead that goes down the thighs or even capris? Short shorts seem a bit informal for a city break (especially if somewhere as traditional as Munich) but if you're not going in a church it's not such an issue.

In the warm evenings I would personally prefer dresses to jumpsuits - it stays warm really late in Central Europe and even at 8pm, with the sun still shining, it's stickily hot, and I'm avoiding any sort of long trousers right now.

Floisme · 25/07/2019 07:56

I'm like ona - very rarely go back to change, just eat wherever we happen to end up. But fair enough if you know you will.

Hat with brim.

I feel much more comfortable covered up in the heat so I'd take loose, ankle length cotton trousers or maxi skirt rather than shorts.

Have a good time.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/07/2019 13:32

Thanks.

Not Munich - Berlin!

I haven't got any cotton maxi skirts - has anybody seen any?

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/07/2019 13:33

My jumpsuits are cropped and very thin viscose. Should be okay for evenings.

I wouldn't be seen dead in Capri pants! Grin

https://www.clarks.co.uk/c/Arla-Jacory/p/26125603 ugly sandals but very comfortable

Berlin is not that hot, OP, I came back from there this morning.

You will need a jacket for the evenings and a lightweight jumper for restaurants with aircon.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/07/2019 15:24

It's usually high 20s in August.

I like a rest/nap/shower before going back out for dinner, Floisme.

Thanks @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie, they do look very comfortable and squishy.

stucknoue · 25/07/2019 17:13

If you are going to Berlin assume it may get colder and rain, the three times I've been in Germany in August it's been decidedly wet and didn't break 18 degrees.

Zenithbear · 25/07/2019 18:09

We're going on a warm city break. Booked a central hotel so definitely going back to change. I'm taking:
Pair of denim shorts
Cotton dress.
Denim strappy dress nice enough for evening.
T-shirts.
Mini skirt.
Thin jacket for night.
Flip flops that are comfy and I can walk in all day and sandals for night.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/07/2019 21:11

We've been there the last five summers and it's been glorious weather every time. One very short storm only.

I'm going to try to find a cotton swishy dress tomorrow- wish me luck!

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/07/2019 21:13

Zenith- impressed that you can wear flip flops all day. I can just about manage the local shop and back!

OP posts:
Shopgirl1 · 25/07/2019 22:04

Due to be 32 degrees in Berlin tomorrow. I was there a few weeks ago and it was 30 + degrees. Was there in mid September a couple of years ago and it was also very hot.
Berlin gets warm summers and cold winters, same as most of Germany, although recently other parts hotter, I’m in Stuttgart and it was close to 40 degrees most of this week.

Zenithbear · 26/07/2019 09:09

Remus I have these rocket dog ones. So comfy.

Summer city break
Floisme · 26/07/2019 09:38

If we went back to the hotel for a rest we would never get up again Grin

I'm afraid I can't help with cotton maxi skirts as mine is from the 90s. I was wearing it the first time my husband kissed me and I'd like to think that's why I kept it but in truth it was because it's that very rare thing: a wrap around with a generous, decency protecting overlap.

Berlin is great, very jealous.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/07/2019 10:53

Cute skirt story! I was wearing a green velvet jacket and DMs the first time I kissed dp.

Those flip flops look nice and squishy.

I'm currently in town. Total number of cotton maxis found so far = zero.
