How to do skirts?

Ok I've not worn skirts since school because I really struggle with how to dress my upper half.

I've bought a black linen blend midi skirt which screams frump however it's so comfy and I think it'll feel lovely on a hot day. But what the hell do I wear on top. Tried tucking a few tops in to get a bit of definition but it looked rubbish!! My waist isn't great, and my legs are probably my best feature hidden under the skirt.

Should I just embrace the comfort and be frumpy? Can I pair it with a particular top to make it look good? Is it just because I don't wear skirts and I feel strange? Answer the impossible please Grin

Link to skirt?

Maybe a thin cotton shirt, with a few buttons open and tied at the waist?

It's sold out so I can't link properly but here's some Google images! It doesn't look that flattering...it was in the next sale and I had work in mind.

Black camisole and then a kaftan thing open over it?

Imstickingwiththisone · 21/07/2019 22:53

Ooh that works surprisingly well, I have a waistline again! Thanks Remus, I have no confidence with skirts, hopefully I'll buy more if my experiment with this one goes ok!

I wear skirts most of the time, but l rarely go for a top that is different from one I would wear with trousers.

A camisole and then a short cardigan worn open and a size smaller than normal can sometimes work too.

I have tops I wear with skirts and tops I wear with trousers-they are very different!

Tops with trousers are a bit longer and can be baggier. Tops with skirts are shorter and sit on the hip.

Sleeveless V neck top on a hot day

A kimono style wrap top might work as well.

MabelMoo23 · 22/07/2019 22:37

You definitely need to tuck in, adds definition in something shapeless. But not something too blousy as they’ll be too much fabric. Hence why the camisole has worked well. So more fitted tops rather than loose and lots of fabric

I got another skirt today! Thought I had it cracked but now I think my arse looks massive in them. So wide!

But then I've never tried to view myself from behind in trousers, it could always be really wide

I've only just started wearing skirts again after many years. I love the midi skirts you see now, but I'm conscious of my lower tummy, so instead of tucking a top in, I wear a fitted, but stretchy, top. The skirt and top seem to work well together and I think they really help to define my waist.

I've gone from no skirts at all to 3 in the space of less than a month!

Camisole for work with some sort of cardigan or cover up for arms, camisole on its own and wedges for evening, t-shirt with sleeves rolled up a bit and knitted at the front for non-work daytime.

although a regular skirt wearer, the thing I like the most, especially in the summer, is the humble dress.
