Urgent - DD graduation tomorrow... no time to shop

DD graduation tomorrow. We got back from holiday in the early hours today.
I have nothing suitable (that fits at the moment 😬) except a plain black dress.
I have black heels and various scarves and bags but everything looks a bit meh.
I have an hour to shop in the morning for something to dress it up a bit ... any suggestions gratefully received.

In fairness you can't really go wrong with a black dress. Are you wanting to accessorize that dress or shall we find you something new? If the latter, we need more info...dress size, shape, hair colour, budget...

Get a red or turquoise hat and bag, just to lift the black. Have a lovely day with your clever DD!

I used to manage degree ceremonies for a large well known University.
Honestly, no-one will be too worried about what you are wearing so just find something comfortable (not too hot) and enjoy the day.
Also, make sure DD has a safety pin that she can use to attach the hood to her bra under her dress/blouse to stop it pulling up and strangling her.

Just looking to accessorise.
Dress is just below knee, sort of skater style, v neck.
Needs to come from a usual high street store.
Not looking to spend lots but need to add a splash of colour or pattern (I think...)

Thanks ... just don't want to look under dressed at the drinks reception afterwards.

It's likely to be warm in the UK. Do you have some sort of a summer dress/sandals. If not, the black will be fine, if a little sombre so use bright colours to accessorise. If you are determined to shop and very short of time then a quick visit to a big supermarket like tesco or sainsbury could work, they often have surprisingly attractive summery outfits at reasonable prices, and you won't be dithered by too much choice, which sounds counterintuitive but often works!

I wouldn't worry too much , there will be outfits ranging from full national costume to elastic waisted trousers. You will look proud, that's the main ring.

Wear your comfiest, smartest shoes and then get a clutch and big earrings to match in the morning. Wear with the black dress, job done!

Don’t bother with a hat, nobody else will. Black dress, colourful, comfortable shoes. Job done. We went to my stepdaughter’s on Friday, no one was dressed up.

Cambionome · 21/07/2019 19:38

I really don't think anyone will be wearing a hat!! Confused

SummerintoAutumn · 21/07/2019 20:57

Thanks all.... feeling better about it all now! Will find something with a bit of colour and enjoy my lunch afterwards!!

Highly recommend the pin on bra! I was given a broach to use which worked well. I was also given some hair pins by a Muslim friend who used them on her head scarf to keep my mortar board on. The photographer didn't like them but I just said tough I was wearing them!

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 21/07/2019 21:30

No to a hat!!!

You'll look fab with something colourful/black and white - wear what you are happy in and smile. Congratulations to your dd.

I met loads of parents of friends of dd1 and dd2 at their graduations and honestly couldn't tell you what they were wearing. They all looked nice and were friendly, happy and smiling.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 21/07/2019 21:30

Oh and comfy shoes obviously

ohcanada · 22/07/2019 11:00

What did you end up buying OP? Hope you all have a lovely day

SummerintoAutumn · 23/07/2019 14:28

I used a grey/blue scarf with a bit of sparkle and a summery bag I already had and felt fine!
I couldn't tell you what everyone else wore so there was no need to worry.

Thanks all.
