“Age spots” does anyone know about them?

I have found a few on my arms and one on the side of my face. Are they a result of the sun? Will I stop getting any more if I use sun cream?
Any information welcomed.

They're usually caused by exposure to the sun, but my G.P. said 'too many birthdays' (i.e. ageing) is a factor.
