So I have received my second (and last!) dress from an online Chinese site. I'm looking for a dress for a family wedding. See the first photo. My husband says there is no shape to it. Is he right?

The second photo is of me in a dress that I like for reference.

[https://www.johnlewis.com/studio-8-nola-jacquard-dress-magenta/p4067282 This]] is also in stock in an 18, and from a company that makes dresses specifially for curvier women. Its v flattering i think. I can't copy the picture on this one for some reason.

Well it’s about 50cm too long for a start and there is far too much fabric elsewhere too. I’m surprised you can’t see this for yourself. You have shape so why hide it.

DontCallMeShitley · 19/07/2019 15:57

The dress looks like the photo, however, it doesn't suit your figure and looks more like a nightdress on you. I think that altering won't make it look a lot better.

It can take a while to work out which shapes and styles suit you, and a lot of trying on before you get there. Perhaps try something without gathers or pleats at the front, and more of a waist.

Bigusbumus - that magenta dress is very nice! I'm gonna order it and try it! It looks comfy too. Pity I can't try in store...it's online only.

Where did the second dress come from?

I'd be looking at them for another.

Tootytata · 19/07/2019 16:00

Mitzik - it's from Billie & Blossom. I've looked but nothing in that style that's dressy enough for a wedding Sad

Dontcallmeshitley - before I had children it look a while to understand what styles suited me. I did get to a point where I knew what suited me.

After having children my mid section feels huge. I have no idea what suits me anymore! I'm probably a size 16 in bust and hips and a size 18 (sometimes 20!) in the waist area!!

Do you like this, it's very flattering, I've seen it on a friend recently, she looks very similar to your body shape/size.

Bagpiss - I like that dress but looks a bit low cut for me! Blush

Neither look good I'm afraid

bagpiss · 19/07/2019 16:17

Lol, My friend was the same! That's how i saw her in it, I work in film & theatre/costuming etc and she asked for help, so as its a wrap dress we just pinned it together behind the crossover bust bit where she was comfortable with it. It still 'sat' fine and looked great. But get if you wouldn't want to do that.

feelingverylazytoday · 19/07/2019 16:30

Hi, OP, I used to be a similar size and shape. Like you, I carry most of my weight round my waist and tummy.
I found 2 styles to be most flattering. A wrap dress can fake a waistline (especially if you wear shapewear underneath), and an empire line, but not too much material under the bust, just a nice gather to skim over your biggest bits.

Ellapaella · 19/07/2019 16:49

The second dress is lovely and looks perfect on you in my opinion.
The first dress does nothing for you and I agree with your DH it has no shape. You alive a lovely figure and there will be many lovelier dresses for you out there than the two you I've ordered from this Chinese website!
