In my forties, mid brown curly shoulder length hair looking a bit tired and a few greys. Hated the highlights I had last summer. Am I too old for balayage?

I'm in my 40s and my hair is getting far too long for my age, I'm told it looks great. I have my roots touched up every 14 days, I will not yield to the grey.
