Colourist Advice

I am hoping there is knowledgable colourist reading as I could really do with some advice! Bear with me...!

I have naturally dark almost black hair which I dye to colour the greys and add shine.

I decided to go a little lighter for summer ( i think I've gone from a 6n to a 5n) - basically a less dark warm brown. My hair really hasn't recovered since.

They did a 'cleanse ' to get rid of the existing dye and coloured it with the 5n. Ever since my hair is frazzled (looked awful after wind or moisture), the top took on a very orange hue and the colour hasn't taken to the roots so my greys are worse and I have really dark roots against the now orange top.

They agreed that something went wrong and recoloured it. They thought the cuticles were still open, which is why it was frazzled and orange (sun damage).

It looked good at first, but it has slowly turned more orange on top and the roots are so obvious because the colour just doesn't seem to go right to the roots.

What's happened?? I have another appointment and need to know what to do? Should I try another hairdresser? Please help! Thank you
