Just that really
I feel I’m to old ,it’s way past my back bra strap..
But what would I have instead?

The only reason people tend to cut their hair as they age is if their hair gets thinner. It’s always looks more bouncy if it’s shorter. However if your hair is still nice and thick and in great condition I think you can have it as long as you like for as long as you like.

Feelingwalkedover · 17/07/2019 15:05

I’m just starting to feel unfashionable with it so long .its mostly tied up in a scrunchie. Not a good look

You shouldn't get it cut if you don't want toHmm

I was looking at a photo of some of my mum's friends the other day they're late 50s to mid 60s and all have long hair. There were 5 of them and all looked fab.

Anois · 17/07/2019 15:13

Maybe try a long bob? A lot of women seem to cut their hair into a "boxy" short cut as they think they're too old for long hair. If your hair looks good keep it, but if you struggle to style it have a look on google for styles you like. Long Bob can still be tied up, use velcro roller for volume, curl or straighten it etc., so it's versatile but not matronly.

MmeBufo · 17/07/2019 15:14

X post. Ah yes. That is something women of all ages suffer with! Maybe you could have a fringe added to soften things and add some interest?

matahairyy · 17/07/2019 16:03

Past your bra strap can look a bit stringy imo. But wear what you like. If it’s thick and glossy then keep it!

withlotsoflove · 17/07/2019 16:11

Gone are the days when age can dictate hair length on a woman!
It’s the condition that should do that!
And to be honest, even if you do have less than perfect hair - do what you like!

LoafofSellotape · 17/07/2019 16:15

I'm growing mine, I have really thick hair with a bit of a wave and it's in good condition,I'm nearing 50. I've had 2 people recently say longer hair makes me look younger and someone I haven't seen for ages said my hair looked nice today.

Have your hair how you like!

groundanchochillipowder · 17/07/2019 16:16

Of course it can look good! If you like it, then keep it. I'm that age and have long, thick, wavy hair. I have too big facial features and short hair just doesn't suit me so I have it long. I give zero grams of fuck what others think of it.

PuppyMonkey · 17/07/2019 16:17

I think long hair suits some women and not others, it’s got nothing to do with being in your fifties. If you wear it tied back all the time anyway, maybe you will suit it short?

Atalune · 17/07/2019 16:19

My friend mum has long hair which is centre parted and a bit wavy. She’s quite bohemian and she looks incredible.

I think your hair, you wear it as you wish!

Maybe trim the ends and play around with a different parting or fringe? Something long and sweeping across your face?

Do you have a good hairdresser who would give you a consultation?

Eustasiavye · 17/07/2019 16:53

Yes you can. I know women who look great at that age with long hair.

thedevilinablackdress · 17/07/2019 17:06

No, you must get a cauliflower perm like all the other old ladies.
If you fancy a change, try a fringe and/or a few inches off.
Otherwise keep your hair however you like!

hopeishere · 17/07/2019 17:09

I think you can have just any length. What I think is more ageing is dyed hair. Particularly bad home dye jobs.

MmeBufo · 17/07/2019 17:19

Yes, dyed hair is dreadfully aging past a cetain point. I think it's probably got more to do with the percentage of grey being covered than the actual age of the person though.

MonSacEstDu31RueCambon · 17/07/2019 17:23

I got nine cut short at 48, because of my age and because it is so thick. But im growing it to my shoulders again now. It is easier. My hair looks the same as it always did. I slso wear my hair up but with earrings and lipstick it looks professional.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 17/07/2019 17:43

Long hair is fine, just make sure it’s regularly trimmed and well conditioned.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/07/2019 17:59

I'm 58. I get it cut to about shoulder length about twice a year, in which time it will have got to about bra strap length. It's still thick (fine hair but enough of it), afaik it looks fine.

CountFosco · 17/07/2019 19:54

Some people suit long hair, some people suit short hair. This is not related to age. Agree with the PP that badly dyed hair is the most aging thing you can do to your hair. Either go natural and embrace the grey (and enjoy spending your money elsewhere) or spend a lot of money getting a good dye job.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 17/07/2019 20:54

I think it suits some people and not others - nothing to do with age. Mine looks crap long, despite its being thick and curly, because I have the wrong shaped face. When I eventually cut it all off, I was 26 and it was suddenly as if the real version of me had emerged! I think if you're always wearing it up, maybe you're subconsciously thinking it doesn't suit you down? Perhaps you could have a good, professional cut to shoulder length and see how you feel about it. If you miss the length, just grow it back. But if you like it, you could go even shorter.

namechangeninjaevervigilant · 17/07/2019 21:33

I had a crop until I was 50 and then started growing it out. I had a bob until I about 55 and then realised in horror that me and every other menopausal woman at my gym looked pretty much identical. What I had thought was Parisian chic was the dreaded ‘mum bob’. Since then (3 years ago) I’ve grown it past my shoulders and grown out my fringe and I love it. It’s harder to maintain and keep looking good and sometimes I have doubts when I look in the mirror but in photos I can see that it’s taken years off me , well - that and the botox and other tweakmentd.

Feelingwalkedover · 17/07/2019 21:36

I think I use it to hide behind ,but equally I tie it up as I hate the feel of it when it’s hot .it gets matted underneath quite a lot .
I expected everyone to say I must cut it as I’m to old now.
Perhaps I will try a good conditioning and trim and see if I feel better
Thankyou

I'm 58 this year and still have the long hair I've always had. No intention of changing it any time soon. I think if it suits you, go for it. Age shouldn't be a consideration.

groundanchochillipowder · 18/07/2019 00:38

It depends on personal preference, your own preference is what suits you. Do what you like and learn to give zero fucks what others think and life gets so much better.

Longhairdonotcare · 18/07/2019 02:34

@CutesyUserName your hair is beautiful
