Would it bother you if your doctor was wearing shoes like these?

I love them, but can't really justify them unless I wear them for work, at least sometimes. They have loads of styles - some are definitely innappropriate but wondered if some would be ok. Rest of outfit is usually colourful but fairly smart/ conservative.

I think they're gorgeous shoes. Going to have a Google for myself now, the cloud ones are lovely

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 16/07/2019 14:01

I think they are great and you should buy them!

I really really REALLY hate going to the dr's/ hospital and have serious anxiety about it. One thing I hate is the uniform. I deal with a lot of male surgeons in a particular conservative specialism and to a man, they are leather shoes chinos belt crisply ironed shirt expensive pen/ glasses.

Being naked/ vulnerable/ groggy from anaesthetic I always feel so icky and scruffy around them. I can't quite describe it but it makes me feel like I've dressed inappropriately for an event and everyone has got it right.

Seeing doctors who look a bit less corporate/ more human just makes me feel better. Do it!

Crochetymum · 16/07/2019 14:02

There's bacon and eggs ones! I'm in love, say no more. You obviously can't just have the one pair.

ginghamstarfish · 16/07/2019 14:03

Wouldn't bother me at all. Used to regularly see a consultant surgeon (at his private office, not sure he did the same in hospital!) while I was living in New Zealand, and he invariably wore a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and flipflops.

theDudesmummy · 16/07/2019 14:05

I am a hospital consultant and if my junior turned up wearing shoes like that I would most certainly have a word with them. For a medical student a paediatric setting, maybe OK (I had pink hair as a medical student but in my defence that was in the 80s)... Otherwise certainly not.

Nyon · 16/07/2019 14:05

If they're judging your shoes they're not that poorly are they.

Buy them.

^ this. In spades. God people are judgemental and mean. Your shoes doesn’t affect your ability to work and people who see you as less because of them need a reality check.

TheRLodger · 16/07/2019 14:08

I really like them and they look comfy. Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest

Beautiful3 · 16/07/2019 14:08

No it wouldnt bother me.

LillithsFamiliar · 16/07/2019 14:14

The only ones that would bother me are the smiley faces because they remind me of raves and drugs.

CollaterlyS1sters · 16/07/2019 14:14

I would think that you were more concerned about your own appearance than about doing your job. I would wonder why you felt the need to draw attention to your own clothes/shoes in a professional setting. I would have less trust in your judgement than in that of another doctor who was dressed appropriately for work.

I say this as someone who has a lot of tattoos and used to have facial piercings.

There are some contexts in which brightly coloured, attention-seeking, childish clothes/accessories are not appropriate. This is one of them.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 16/07/2019 14:16

I'm currently wearing the Kitten/Ball of String ones and I also have the purple Unicorn ones. They're very comfy and they make me smile, I give no fucks about anyone else's opinion on them.

theDudesmummy · 16/07/2019 14:16

OK, apologies, I was too harsh. I just had another look at the OP picture. For some reason I just noticed the smiley face ones. Those ones are entirely inappropriate in any medical setting (and especially where bad news could be given or when illicit drugs are an issue at all). The rest, well I probably would have worn them when I was a junior, possibly to work. I would not wear them now though.

Littlechocola · 16/07/2019 14:17

Clearly you've never worked with psychiatric nurses and hospital SWs ... all utterly batshit in the fashion stakes

Proud of it @MyOpinionIsValid Grin

Do what makes you happy op.

ColaFreezePop · 16/07/2019 14:18

Depends on the pattern. Some I would just think nice interesting shoes and get shoe envy, others I would think you treat a lot of children and smile.

@theDudesmummy gosh you are miserable. Some of them are just patterned.

newnamewhosthis · 16/07/2019 14:19

I can't remember the last time I even looked at my doctors shoes Confused

If I seen my doctor wear them the most thought I would give are they are fucking horrendous (personal opinion) and that's it.

I would give zero fucks about you wearing them or your ability to do your job.

wonkylegs · 16/07/2019 14:19

Wouldn't really care myself but it may depend on your patient group how well they would go down.
I'm a long term (20+) yrs regular patient so my opinion of my consultant is down to the relationship we've built up over time rather than my impression of her dress sense.

Ninkaninus · 16/07/2019 14:20

If you’re a doctor you do actually need to give some fucks as to what your patients might think, though.. OP knows that, which is why she’s asking...

Obviously if you’re just walking down street I would give precisely no fucks what shoes you wear and conversely I wouldn’t expect you to give a fuck what I think.

Maryann1975 · 16/07/2019 14:21

I’m sure there has been a temporary doctor at my surgery who has worn shoes similar to this. If I can get an appointment and when I get in I haven’t been kept waiting for an hour, I am not fussy at all what shoes you wear. I am likely to be over joyed to finally be seen. My daughter would really like them too and that’s got to be a good thing, since she hates going to the doctor, she might actually like coming in to see you (who she would forever refer to as ‘the doctor with the lovely shoes’ or something similar).

TinyTear · 16/07/2019 14:22

I have these and the blue butterfly ones
wear them to work (professional setting, but smart casual clothes) and never had any complaints, just compliments

Would it bother you if your doctor was wearing shoes like these?
Dhalandchips · 16/07/2019 14:24

I can honestly say that I have never ever noticed what my doctor is wearing on her/his feet!! And I've seen a lot of doctors!!!

Pythonesque · 16/07/2019 14:25

Some of them I have no trouble imagining a GP wearing. Agree they'd be very at home in paediatrics (I started training in paeds, though have been out of clinical work for a long time now; I remember I had a lovely smart black work skirt - it got worn once after I started a paediatrics job and never again for work!).

I think you have to pick what works with your own personal style, confidence, and context.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 16/07/2019 14:25

To be honest I would be bothered by anyone wearing those, they are hideous Grin

I would say if you're a consultant or a GP you could probably get away with them. I've worked with several consultants who have an "interesting" dress sense and I think that more senior you are, the more eccentric you can afford to be. I am fairly junior and definitely wouldn't wear them because I would be nervous about being pulled up on it also did I mention that they are hideous? BUT I regularly wear jazzy socks to work so maybe I'm just as bad.

HeadintheiClouds · 16/07/2019 14:28

Well, nobody’s going to actually complain, Tiny, why would they? I wouldn’t go so far as to complain if my doctor wore them either, no matter how inappropriate I think they are in a professional setting.
And I do. I’d take them far less seriously though, which is not something I want to feel when I’m consulting someone about my health problems.

rainbowheart · 16/07/2019 14:31

We have several doctors at my surgery.. 2 wear very smart formal wear, one looks like he rolled out of bed having slept in his shirt and baggy trousers.. I much prefer the more relaxed looking doctor.. I just feel more at ease.. I like that he didn't bother ironing his shirt because it makes him human.. I wouldn't be put out by these shoes.. and if they didn't match your outfit even better! X

theDudesmummy · 16/07/2019 14:33

@ColaFreezePop I am not at all miserable, very far from it, but work in a very serious environment. But I have already admitted I made a mistake about the flowery ones etc. They are OK and I would not say anything, although I would not wear them and I can't imagine any consultant in my field would. It is the smiley face ones that are totally inappropriate, and in my department would earn you a visit to HR.
