They say their fashion needs to move on at a pace according to sky news.
I say they just need to read the numerous threads on here and bloody listen to what people are saying!

Agree on stock levels. They had a lot of summer things I really wanted but went out of stock.

StarJumpsandaHalf · 11/07/2019 19:16

I chucked my Sparks card, what a load of rubbish and I haven't bought any clothing there in as long as I can remember. I'm actually a shareholder Confused Used to buy all my staples there as a matter of course.

Fibbke · 11/07/2019 19:16

to pay decent but not silly money for eg a good quality cotton or wool jumper

A good quality wool jumper made in the uk, with m and s mark up would cost about 60 quid at least.

applepieicecream · 11/07/2019 19:18

I have to say that I’m loving Marks and Spencer at the moment.

Straight leg jeans are brilliant, not cut too low, perfect rolled up a bit with trainers. Have them in 3 colours

The relaxed basic T-shirt, again perfect and about £5 or £6

Well cut well fitting bikinis

Great work trousers at a good price

Cashmere cardi’s which are machine washable and I also love lots of their shoes, flatform brogues, flat espadrilles, comfy loafers

Also bought 3 or 4 great maxi dresses which I get complemented on all the time,

Veja dupe trainers

There’s a lot of rubbish but after years of not buying a thing I thought it found its feet

Ninkaninus · 11/07/2019 19:19

I would pay that, and more. And I do. Increasingly, elsewhere. Because although I do like their clothes for work, I find their linen/cotton isn’t always quite thick enough, and I can get better fabric/cut/finish elsewhere.

Ninkaninus · 11/07/2019 19:19

(In regards to £60 jumper)

fancynancyclancy · 11/07/2019 19:22

The problem is everyone says, “good quality pieces don’t mind paying more”, but the reality is there is no sizeable market for this. Vast majority of fashion sales now are cheap, mass produced.

Agree.

It's such a tricky role to get right. Supply chains are so long and collections planned so far in advance that even if someone joins tomorrow, their first proper collection will not be ready until A/W 2020 at the earliest

Exactly

What is it with padded bras, who wears them? Was in Debenhams the other week another confusing store, wanted a bra, rows and rows of foam padded bras one sad little stand of non wired non padded ones. I need some new knickers and am dreading schlepping around for cotton waist high ones.

PixarMastermind · 11/07/2019 19:25

I agree - uniglo do good quality basics well. I think my merino wool roll neck jumper was £20.

I am happy to pay around 60 - I have picked up a few things at the white company- they had a jumper season which was cotton/ linen for about 59 and with a 15% voucher- not bad.

If it means I have that jumper for a few years, I am happy to pay.

Fibbke · 11/07/2019 19:28

The majority wouldnt pay 60 quid for a jumper.

Uniqlo doesn't fit me, I'm tall and everything is too short in the body. Also the quality isn't great although i agree their stuff is appealingly basic and good colours.

Fresta · 11/07/2019 19:29

The problem M&S have is that because their range is so big, most stores don't stock the good stuff. You have to go to the big stores to find anything that's been advertised. My local M&S is full of frumpy, boring work stuff, a limited amount of toiletries, only the basic range of shoes, and if you do find something nice they never have your size!

BubblesBuddy · 11/07/2019 19:29

I have quite a high disposable income and I would like pure wool trousers. There were none this winter. I am prepared to pay good money but have to go elsewhere.

I do realise, however, I’m in a minority! Most people will not pay! You only have to look at the wildly varying opinions on any M&S thread to know no one is pleased by many of their offerings!

I thought Per Una had improved. Says me who is currently wearing excellent cotton chinos from that range! They also have very many midi dresses. I bought a fantastic unlined coat in the winter too and I’ve found decent basics.

However you cannot fill giant stores with basics and one or two special ranges each year! Who on earth could sustain that business right now? The shops are too big. Choice is too much and few people under 35 go near it.

Uniqlo is tiny in this country by comparison. You just cannot compare the size of that business in this country with M&S. The competition is huge and fast moving. M&S don’t get trends out in the shops quickly enough. They need to “copy” the catwalks quickly but with wearable clothes for special ranges. The boho floral and stripes look is big this summer but M&S needed to get them out quickly. Many have come on line now - in mid July!

Nearly every high street clothes shop is struggling if it’s mid to high price. Jaeger, LK Bennett and many others have problems. M&S cannot afford to go expensive in this market. They tried with their up market Made in Uk range (or what’re it was called) from premium fabrics and look what happened to that! Utterly trashed on MN when a M&S executive came on to talk about it. I like British made tweeds, high quality cotton, pure wool and silk but you have to pay a lot for it. So M&S will never please all of the people all of the time ever again! It’s impossible.

BubblesBuddy · 11/07/2019 19:31

Mand S grade their shops according to income in the area. It’s not even about size of shop. Lower income areas are bottom of the pile. It used to go to Flagship down to level 3. Many smaller shops just won’t sell the decent stuff so go on line!

SinglePringle · 11/07/2019 19:35

SORT YOUR BRA SIZING OUT.

32F IS NOT HUGE / UNUSUAL IF YOU MEASURE CORRECTLY AND STOP ASDING ON INCHES.

I WANT TO SPEND MONEY IN YOUR STORES ON LINGERIE BUT YOU DO NOT CATER FOR ME.

I AM NOT A 36DD

(Sorry for shouting).

costacoffeecup · 11/07/2019 19:35

Everything has frills on. Not what middle aged women want.

I tried on two jackets in the sale today - reduced from £60 to £12 and I still decided no. I'm a large size 12 and the 10 was massive on me.

I bought a camel wool coat in the sale for £20 four years ago and it's still my go to winter coat.

I can't fathom them. I really want them to do well because it's an institution, members of my family have worked for them. But they just seem to have no clue about the clothes.

Kids clothes are great! Sleepsuits are bigger than next's so last longer.

LadyBumclock · 11/07/2019 19:35

What about Boden, Toast, Jigsaw, Hobbs, Hush etc which charge 50-100 or more for a dress or jumper? Even shops like Fat Face and White Stuff are in the region of £50 for a cardigan or dress. They seem to be doing OK. Yes some of these shops are mainly online, but M&S has online shopping too.

katseyes7 · 11/07/2019 19:36

PancakeandKeith Ditto, ditto and ditto!!

LadyBumclock · 11/07/2019 19:38

Of course these aren't prices for the majority or for budget shoppers, but then nor are M&S's food prices.

We already have cheap, fast fashion from Primark, New Look, H&M etc who do it a LOT better. But it's environmentally crap and unsustainable, and M&s are rubbish at it, so they should try quality and style instead.

fancynancyclancy · 11/07/2019 19:40

You cannot compare the business model of Uniqlo to M&S. I think Uniqlo only has stores in London & maybe 10 of them. They tried outside of London but it didn’t work.

teta · 11/07/2019 19:41

I think m&s have got a lot right the past 18 months. Summer dresses in natural fabrics, cropped wide jeans and linens. Very recently some v neck t shirts with cotton. The rows of padded bras that stand up by themselves are however crap but the non padded Bralettes are fab.
Stocking is dreadful. They seem to have a initial run of everything in a very small amount and then you wait weeks or months in some cases for it to come back in stock.

HidingFromDD · 11/07/2019 19:41

I live near a very large store. I wanted a pair of black work trousers in a 10 or 12. Should have been simple? They had 1, yes 1, pair of black trousers, wide legged and long so I couldn't even turn them up!!

Nat6999 · 11/07/2019 19:41

I used to love M & S but they are so bad now I cant remember the last time I bought anything from them, not even knickers.

fancynancyclancy · 11/07/2019 19:46

M&S have far too many shops when high streets in general are declining. They need to close a load & focus on flagships & online. However that means focusing on more fashion pieces & alienating some customers. I’m not sure how they can do it. I’ve never shopped there (except for undies etc) as it’s not my style but then when they do something nice you see it on everyone which also puts me off. They can’t win really.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/07/2019 19:49

Don’t get me started on the shoes!!!Plastic is NOT NICE !!!!

M&S is the first place I look for shoes . They do half sizes and shoes suitable for vegans ( I am a non-leather user by choice)

And a load of Non-Tested products .

I do fit the Demographic.
I am middle-aged .,I like things to last . Washable .
Standard height and size .
Some money to spend.

They should give me loads of Sparks Points Grin
