So M&S have sacked their head of fashion

They say their fashion needs to move on at a pace according to sky news.
I say they just need to read the numerous threads on here and bloody listen to what people are saying!

It didn’t seem to work, sorry - it’s basically a lady who works for M&S and posts photos on a blog, of herself wearing their clothes!

Kazzyhoward · 13/07/2019 19:42

Is it too much to ask that the new head of fashion takes action to ensure that their sizing is consistent? Recently their quality control has nose-dived. I bought two different colours of the same size of blouse (according to the labels), but they were clearly completely different when you hold one against the other, not fractionally either, the body length of one was a good 3 or 4 inches longer than the other but the sleeves were shorter. Their sizing is a shambles. Same with shoes, I tried a pair on in the shop, but felt the left shoe was a lot tighter - I compared them and the left was clearly to the eye smaller than the right, yet they carried the same size label - I managed to find another pair of "the same" size and they were fine. There was a time that M&S was all about quality, but sadly they still think they can get away with higher pricing, but low quality - they can't.

AlexaAmbidextra · 13/07/2019 19:58

They certainly need consistency in their sizing. I bought a pair of black jeans last year that were great and a good fit. Popped in a couple of weeks later and grabbed another pair off the rail. Same style, same size and length, same code number. Got them home and they were a good two inches shorter than the original pair and tighter in the waist. It’s a nuisance when even buying the same item you have to try it on in store as you can’t trust that it will be the same size.

browzingss · 13/07/2019 20:19

Most women’s fashion retailers do not group items by type (trousers, blouses etc) on the shop floor but rather by trend. This is different to menswear where items are typically grouped by clothing type, as women have different shopping habits. Good fashion trends/visual merchandising should actually benefit customers as it should give plenty of outfit ideas, be more intriguing/appealing etc

LadyBumclock · 13/07/2019 23:15

It's true that lots of shops don't organise by clothing type, but most clothes shops aren't as big as M&S. Also they'll often organise another way, eg by colour group, so you can still narrow it down fairly easily.

If not by for example "trousers", they could maybe have sections for workwear, holiday/beach, jeans, jersey basics, occasionwear etc. Like they do for bras and tights.

Floisme · 14/07/2019 10:39

Do none of you shop on line? It’s so much easier.
I know the thread's moved on a bit but I used to shop online all the time whereas now I do it as little as possible. I got sick of having to order everything in at least two sizes and then having to wait a couple of weeks for a refund. I started wondering how much retailers must be making jut on the interest of banking everyone's money for a week or so.
So no I don't think having to pay just to try clothes on is modern or enlightened. In fact I think the old school catalogues where you didn't pay anything upfront were far more customer focused.

I also enjoy real shops where you can see the colours for real and feel the fabrics. Ordering from a screen and trying on at home is sometimes convenient but I find it pretty joyless, like a business transaction.

M&S are in fact better than most at this in that you can collect from a store, try on and get a refund straight away. (I'm assuming you can still do that.)

I'm desperate for long tops.

I'm tall but my height is on my body rather than my legs so whilst 5ft 9 my inside leg is only 27 inches. Add on over large boobs and it's a nightmare. I have to wear "short" (36 inches usually) dresses as tops to feel comfortable and I'm fed up of it. Most stores, M&S included think longline is 29 inches, it really isn't!!!

Please make your things better quality, not as likely to bobble/pill, longer and plainer M&S!

I also echo

I haven’t bought clothes for me there in years. I want somewhere where I can buy LK Bennet style work dresses without spending £300 and clothes in nice fabrics.

I remember writing to them asking why lots of their baby outfits stopped at 9-12m as there were loads of lovely dresses I’d have put my 2 year old in. I got such an obnoxious reply basically telling me I was wrong and most people want their little girls to look less babyish and go into the children’s ranges. I’ve noticed they’ve extended lots of the sizes more recently so perhaps they started listening.

Sooverthemill · 14/07/2019 17:33

mebenn this works

Greenho · 15/07/2019 15:06

I went in for some jeans recently and in most styles didn't have my size, I tried again following week in hope had restocked but no.

I like a shop that can be relied upon for good quality basics & doesn't just follow fashion trends its frustrating when everywhere's offering similar styles or colours if these don't suit you which seems to often be the case for me.

XingMing · 16/07/2019 20:54

My sister, who works for M&S, suggests that if they did a really good maternity wear range each year, and followed it up with lovely baby clothes and sensible wearable basics, plus keeping the old lady stuff for their legacy customers, and the jeggings, they would have a decent business model.

Deathraystare · 18/07/2019 10:02

GOOD QUALITY FABRICS.

I hear ya! Fed up of Viscose Viscose and for a change...viscose. Or for a change - Tencel. I bought something Tencel thinking this won't make me sweat like a oig but it did!

I noticed going through there yesterday that they have loads of frumpy dresses in vile colours. But to be fair I am grateful for the basics stuff and like their jeggings and bras in big sizes and the shoes!

furrytoebean · 18/07/2019 11:21

I agree xing

I think they should try to corner the capsule wardrobe market.

beanaseireann · 18/07/2019 11:22

Cotton knickers- none of this microfibre sh*t.
In nude. In bikini, midi thong etc. You can do them in multipacks as you do with black and white.
Please.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/07/2019 11:26

I bought two lovely dresses there.

Washed them a few times and they are now almost unwearable.

Quality’s gone really downhill.

woodhill · 18/07/2019 11:26

I thought the stuff was better this year but agree about cotton in knickers- I won't wear micro fibre

woodhill · 18/07/2019 11:27

And scoop necks or v-necks not horrible crew ones

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/07/2019 18:15

YY to scoop necks. I cannot wear crew necks without my bust looking huge.

goose1964 · 18/07/2019 18:32

I love their soft knitted jumpers, I can't wear wool as it gives me a rash. I have some years old and they still look good as new
