Summer hat for enormous head

Firstaidnovice · 04/07/2019 13:49

Does anyone have a recommendation for a wide brimmed hat that comes in a really large size that isn't really old fashioned, or doesn't make me look like an Indiana Jones impersonator?

When I say large size, I mean that I have never found a ladies hat in a normal high street store that didn't perch on top of my head like a mister man.

I bought an amazing one in France a few years ago that was made out of a slightly knitted fabric but with a wired brim that was stretchy enough but I've just lost it, and really need a replacement, as in addition to the giant head I am also extremely pale, yay Grin

I feel your pain! I just got a men's one in the end. Large! All the ladies ones just perched on top of my head.

PinkSquidgyPig · 04/07/2019 13:53

Tadpolefrog: are we twins?

Tadpoletofrog · 04/07/2019 13:56

If you are very short, blonde, pale as a ghost with an enormous noggin, then maybe!

SirVixofVixHall · 04/07/2019 13:57

Straw hats tend to be tiny. I have a medium sized head but they give me headaches from being too tight. Like you op, I had one years ago with a wired brim, that fitted without digging in, and I am always looking for a replacement. Mine was an Italian make I think, quite expensive but I bought it in the sale.
I have found that if you snip the stitching on the tape inside hats, you can pull the tape out and gently stretch the hat a bit.

My current headwear of choice is a North Face cotton cap, with adjustable headband. I also use a thin, lightweight scarf to protect the back of my neck.

Tilley hats are the way to go - all sorts of fab designs (not just the Indiana Jones look) in multiple sizes.

CMOTDibbler · 04/07/2019 14:26

I have a 61cm head (xl - xxl in mens hats) and have this hat which fits nicely

Imarriedmortenharket · 04/07/2019 14:36

I have the same issue. The men's department in any department store will have a hat to fit, wide brims are a problem though. I have a men's Panama which is quite nice.

Tidypidy · 04/07/2019 14:44

I too have a great big head further complicated by great big hair! I found several ladies sunhats in TK Maxx that fitted. Man hats can work too, cricket hats are worth a look.

Lily715 · 04/07/2019 14:52

I have this exact problem and have been looking for a hat that fits me for years! All I can wear is baseball caps.

Lexilooo · 04/07/2019 14:58

Fellow massive head checking in and hoping for suggestions.

My huge head (62cm) won't even fit in many men's hats. I pretty much never wear a hat they look so stupid on me 😫

smallgreyelephant · 04/07/2019 15:17

Me too (obvs it's the big brain Hmm )
I get men's hats: they suit me and I like the smart trilby style. Men tend to get a choice of head sizes too.
I've found really wide brimmed hats in the local large garden store. They tend to be in neutral, gardeny colours but offer a good size range.

For mega-protection go for a golf hat (men's large). Not glam but black does the job and is more my style than embellishment. Also sailing stores will do serious sizeable hats. Although they may say "Musto" on the side. If you have a country-folk fishing-type shop near you go there.
Forget fashion shops: they will have a couple of sizes in fashionable tiny lady-head size only.
If you want pompoms and stuff (not judging!) get a men's straw hat and change the ribbon and add whatever floats your boat from the john lewis haberdashery department.
Also as another person mentioned you can unpick the internal hat band but be careful to unpick that and not the hat itself!.
In short the (ladies') high street simply wont have the range needed.

Firstaidnovice · 04/07/2019 16:35

Well, I'm glad to have united the large head brigade! I really really want a ladies hat though, and ideally a fashion hat rather than sports. I'm sure other people can pull of a man's panama or cricket hat beautifully, but I really can't. I just want one holiday photo where it doesn't look like Indiana Jones is photobombing our group.

I am going to delve into the far reaches of the internet (there must be a specialist retailer out there for us!) and will report back. Failing that I will have to make a pilgrimage to the same town in France and buy all the nice stretchy hats.

Thanks for all the suggestions though! I will check out tk maxx and might also buy a cheapy somewhere and try the band cutting suggestion

I'm only posting as I want to know how many MNers have measured their heads as a result of this thread Grin

How do you measure it? Is it like the old bra sizes where you add numbers as I just measured the fattest part of my head and it's 50cm Hmm

I think I have the opposite problem as I'm just so fucking small, I share shoes and clothes with my DC (teens not toddlers Grin) I love hats, especially the big wide brimmed straw ones but I just look like a squat toadstool or a child wearing a giant lampshade.

I wonder if hats only suit a very tiny proportion of society, and extra small or big headed (that sounds wrong) will never find the holy grail of a nice hat. (See what I did there, Indiana Jones Wink)

PS

I have an enormous head and long thick hair and I have just bought this ladies hat from Amazon
Straw hat
My head measures 61cm and the large fits easily. It's very comfortable!
I feel your pain - I hate hat buying!

campista · 04/07/2019 21:34

Same problem - lmarried - yes, dept store men's Panama /trilby styles look really good on us!

Firstaidnovice · 04/07/2019 21:34

I have no idea how to measure my head, and frankly I'm scared! I have been reassured by various people that it doesn't actually look big, but you know, people are polite.

Anyway, that hat looks great, thanks Acer, I think I will order and give it a go. Would rather a recommendation than endless online returns. Also, DH just commented that it was very Poirot which gives it bonus points (as you can see, my fashion sense is very current)

Sorry to hear small heads have it tough too though....

Firstaidnovice · 09/07/2019 15:53

Just as an update, I bought the hat Acertree linked upthread, and while I'm not entirely convinced it suits me it is a nice hat, and, drum roll, it fits! Only just mind, so my head must be properly enormous. Hope this might be of use to any other giant noggin owners searching in the future

Really pleased it worked out for you!
