Curling Hair with Straighteners - Does it Work?

Just that really.

I have shoulder length, very fine hair which never holds a curl. I've seen a load of YouTube videos about curling hair with straighteners. As always on YouTube, it looks great when they do it, but does it actually work in real life? Or is it a faff?

I have super fine hair as well. The curling with a straightner does work but the curls do not last in my hair.

Thanks for your reply - a fellow purple person too!

I'm kind of resigned to the curls not lasting - I think that's just the sort of hair I have. Is it difficult to do that 'twist and pull' thing with the straightener? I did try it years ago and couldn't hack it but it was a fairly rubbish straightener so I'm hoping technology has improved since then. Do you use a mini or a full-size straightener?

I do it all the time. Just use your straighteners pointing upwards (using them sideways like if you were straightening gives you ringlets) and don't tug your hair through - be gentle and don't put unnecessary stress on your scalp.

If your hair doesn't hold a curl, then doing it with straighteners won't do it better than anything else.

Yes, it works,it’s really easy; but like anything you need to set the curls with some sort of holding product if your hair is soft and doesn’t hold curls for long.

No - probably not! But I can't resist a new hair gadget so am looking for excuses!

Thanks to all for your replies!

Always do curls on 1 or 2 day old hair, freshly washed just won't hold curls, especially fine hair like yours or mine! 🙂

I have similar hair, I can't curl it with straighteners but have had great results with a curling wand.
Use a heat protection spray (that helps to set it I think). Curl so you end up with ringlets, let them cool and spray st least once. Then just before you go out, gently run your fingers through to loosen them.
They last all day for me this way

My hair sounds like yours. My salon always gives me pretty beachy waves with a straightener, so it’s possible, but I can never achieve the same look at home! I just can’t master the technique, was much easier to curl my hair with a straightener when it was longer

I'm wondering if that might mean it would be better to use mini straighteners? I think Primark do one for the massive sum of £5, so that might be a good way to try it out?
