My hair isn't very thick so presumably I'd need some padding too - what contraption would I buy?!

Search for low chignon bun and I'm sure there'll be tonnes of tutorials on how to do it.

Here are a few links to YouTube tutorials- there seem to be quite a few available. I agree "low chignon" seems to be the term to search for.
