Going grey (after highlights)

I can't decide whether to stop highlighting my hair and let it go grey. I'm 46 and a bit sick of the cost. DH and DD think I should stop dyeing.

My hair was mid brown originally but people now think I was blonde originally until I show them an old pic, though you can tell it's now highlighted.

I'm not sure what colour it is now underneath. The front is bright silvery white at the temples to mousey in between but the back of my head looks quite dark (maybe steel or brown, hard to tell)

I've looked at some of those grombre insta pages but seen mostlypeople with dark hair.

The lazy (& cheap) option is just to not redye it for 6 months and see but I'd like to know what I'm aiming for. I'd be happy to ask for different type of highlights but have to have foils as I have a mild allergy to brown dye.

Opinions welcome please!

I am having the exact conundrum right now, except I'm 28!

Same mousey colour as you are describing and bright white/silver at temples and about 30% throughout roots
