Women's socks for bigger feet

MrsBertBibby · 13/06/2019 07:45

My mum has size 8 feet, and they are big broad feet at that. She is 80, with dementia, and not very good at cooperating with getting her socks on.

I am astonished that no one sells Women's socks in bigger sizes. I wanted to get her some soft top, bamboo type socks, but as soon as I try mens ranges, they are all rugged cotton with elastic tops that look like they would make pretty good tourniquets.

Setting aside the nuttiness of socks being sex specific, can anyone help with finding comfy socks for the larger-hoofed women? Preferably not expensive, as a nursing home is likely soon which means a lot of lost socks!

I wouldn't say that 8 is particularly big - I take a 9 and have no trouble buying anything for feet. If she has dementia I'd recommend some lounge / bed socks with grip soles, so she can walk around with only the socks on if she is that way inclined. Amazon have a good range of socks for men and women in her size.

Rapanui do bamboo sticks for men and women, I think? Also happy socks

LambChopsMcGee · 13/06/2019 08:14

Bamboo socks, obviously. Not sticks...

SpacePlusTime · 13/06/2019 08:17

I also have this problem! But it’s my feet not my Mums Smile

However, I would also like some decent sized soft top bamboo socks... I find the same as you in terms of the men’s cotton tourniquets, and women’s are usually size 6 - 8 and more on the 6 side...

Will look at Rapanui as love their T-shirt’s anyway.

MrsBertBibby · 13/06/2019 08:27

Rapanui are nice but quite dear! Especially with delivery, and just buying an experiment pair.

Although why such a right on company sells socks with such ferocious gender division is beyond me! Why do women get cute foxes and bumble bees and men get sharks and rockets? Ffs.

Hmm had a look, this raised my other problem, all men’s socks are so long! I don’t want them halfway up my leg!

Have done trying of socks, these are the best I’ve found (bearing in mine my hatred of tall socks).

They have a soft top, and the 4 - 8 size is just about ok for my 8 and a third sized feet.

Jammiebammie · 13/06/2019 08:41

There’s some pretty printed ones here in larger sizes but they are quite a bit dearer.

Also here have 5 pairs of black bamboo socks in larger sizes for about £18.

I think it’s the bamboo that’s pushing the price up though, plenty of high street shops and even supermarkets have more ‘feminine’ patterns in their men’s socks, topman, river island, primark etc. here for example.

Itsagrandoldteam · 13/06/2019 08:45

Try Amazon, type in diabetic socks. These type of socks are loose around the ankles.

MyNameIsCharlesII · 13/06/2019 08:48

I’m a size 8. I wear men’s from Next and M&S and they’re never tight on the ankle. They do come further up the leg but I like that personally. But I’ve got some bamboo ones from Joules that are lovely.

MyNameIsCharlesII · 13/06/2019 08:48

Women’s bamboo from Joules I mean.

MrsBertBibby · 13/06/2019 08:48

Oh that's great, those were out of stock but I've ordered her these in both colours, on special and if they're no use the blue ones will do for me.

I shall report back!

She wears slippers indoors, but she is still fairly active and can usually be cajoled into walking a mile or more so decent socks are a must, even though getting her in and out of them is a nightmare as she no longer responds to requests to point her foot. Apart from insisting she is.

Man alive, if we had failed to "point like a ballerina" she'd have whacked us. Lucky for her we don't always reap what we sow Grin

Thank you, sock gurus!

OP do update us.
I have the same problem for DD, but she's still at school and needs white knee-high socks. She squeezes into M+S ones but they are a bit small. Anyone have any ideas? Apols the bit of hijack.

BikeRunSki · 13/06/2019 09:04

Look at Bam for bamboo socks, they do a lot of their patterns on both the women’s and men’s ranges, the only difference is the size. Very soft.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 13/06/2019 09:08

I only have size 6 feet but I find ladies' socks pinch my fat toes (4-7 my arse). I buy men's socks in 6-8 from TK Maxx, they have a good selection of bamboo, silk/cashmere, cotton/bamboo, whatever you like. Your mum might need the next size up.

Mrsmadevans · 13/06/2019 09:14

Have discovered TKMax sell Jane&Bleeker socks , picked up 3 prs for 3.99 on Tuesday. They are an American designer and the sizes are from 6-10 they are really lovely socks, so soft. My DD has size 10 feet and very wide she wears these and their slippers and really loves them.

MrsBertBibby · 13/06/2019 09:19

Thank you for those further tips. Stored for future reference!

Hijack away champion! I had not realised that women's socks were so restricted above size 7 until I started trying to wrastle her into her socks. To be honest, I hadn't really realised what solid great feet she has! Nothing like mine. I shall be peering at my sisters' plates to see what the gene tombola gave them!

She struggled to find shoes when we were kids, but larger sizes in shoes had become so much more widespread I assumed socks had caught up too. Almost all the teen girls I know have feet of size 8 and more. Bloody Amazons!

They don't even really go to size 7 IMO. They are all one size, 4-7, which fit a size 4 or 5 best. The only place I've seen a range of ladies sizes in LIDL, possibly because German ladies have big feet and won't squish them into an inadequate sock.

championquartz · 13/06/2019 16:00

Thanks MrsBert

I agree Tawdry. Women's socks are 'mean' with their yarn.

emilyhamptoncakeslice · 13/06/2019 18:33

Size 8 here. The thing to look for in women's socks is the shops that do size 3-5 and 6-8 rather than 4-7 or 4-8

Not sure where you'd get soft tops though

MrsBertBibby · 16/06/2019 12:15

The Elle socks seem to be a big improvement!
