Blond hair question

Rooftree · 04/06/2019 18:21

There are many older women out there whose hair must be naturally white but have it coloured a beigy ashy blond colour.
How the hell is this done?!
All blond dyes which are perm have bleach in to lighten darker hair burnI would bet money that these women with white hair aren’t bleaching their already white hair surely?
There must be a blond dye that deposits colour without lightening but I sure as hell cant find it.
I tried to move to semi perm as this wouldn’t bleach but there are literally none that are blond, they are all darker. Even a castings ash blond one isn’t blond, it’s much darker and is also gingery.
So please please someone tell me, how on earth do I add ash blond colour to my greys? There HAS to be a way and I truly don’t understand why I can deposit browns but not blonds. These older women must be doing it, how?? Not everyone who wants blond hair has darker hair, some of us have white or greying hair that we want to tint blond!! Please please help!

You need to go to a hairdresser, at least initially.

Rooftree · 04/06/2019 18:29

Every time I go to the hairdressers for a cut (I generally see a diff one each time) I ask about this and they all look at me like I’m a loon. They don’t seem to understand the concept of adding blond tint, they just want to bleach highlights for me and dye the rest brown. I’ve already got light and dark though (brown and greying) so why would I pay for that? I just want to tint the white to blond.
I also can’t really afford to pay for colour at the mo.

A really hopeful bump, someone must know what these ladies do?

I don't know about tint sorry but I have loads of white at the front and sides but the back is still quite dark.

My hair is long & was a rich Auburn colour until I couldn't cope with the roots .
I started having a mix of foil highlights & eventually got to the stage I could use a box dye .

I use either L'Oréal preference :Stockholm
Or
Schwarzkopf colour expert :Light cool blonde (favourite)

These seem to look more multi-tonal rather than block colour & I only do the roots mostly then refresh to the ends every so often .

Rooftree · 04/06/2019 19:54

Thanks watcher. That sounds nice but I’m scared to put anything perm blond on as they all seem to have bleach in and I don’t want to bleach my brown hair. I assume they’re permanent? I just want to add colour to my white hair.

I wonder if it is a toner you need.
After I have mine bleached, I have a toner put on it to make it a silver colour instead of yellow. It doesn't lift it further but it does make it the right shade of blonde/ white.

WatcherOfTheNight · 04/06/2019 20:06

Sorry ,I misunderstood. Yes they are permanent,my hair is very strong & doesn't take easily so it's the easiest option for me .

I've never used them myself but Jerome Russel does a semi perm range ,might be worth looking at the reviews online ?

Rooftree · 04/06/2019 20:13

Thanks both. I’ve actually tried the Jerome Russell toner in silver which is a very strong purple goop, it definitely toned down brassiness in my hair but didn’t add colour apart from adding a tinge of purple to the white which isn’t what I was after! There are other colours available but they are semi perm 8 washes which just isn’t practical, I don’t want to dye my hair every 1-2 weeks.
Sorry for being negative about the suggestions! I truly don’t understand why this is so very hard

Have you got a sally beauty shop nearby?

LorelaiRoryEmily · 04/06/2019 20:37

@Rooftree I’m a hairdresser. There are permanent blonde colours that don’t contain bleach, it would depend on your own colour but if you want to pm a photo to me I’m happy to help

Rooftree · 04/06/2019 20:49

Just googled and yes there is a Sally’s nearby.
Lorelei thanks so much but I’ve just gone to pm you and I can’t see how to attach a photo Confused

Do you want to post one here? You can get it removed again!

highhighmountain · 04/06/2019 21:22

I do this to my own hair. I brew up a very small pinch of turmeric (less than quarter of a tsp not too much it stains yellow), 6 camomile teabags, 2 redbush teabags and quarter of a tsp of instant coffee in a teapot until it cools enough to pour over clean dry hair. After pouring it onto my hair I leave it in and blow dry. I do this each time I wash my hair. It fades after a wash but not completely but it is so cheap and easy I like to keep it topped up.Smile

Rooftree · 04/06/2019 21:23

Here you go! I don’t know how helpful it will be though as the light’s quite bright and also I have a semi perm “ash blond” on it which did cover the grey but was v yellow and much darker than what ash blond should be in my view. It’s naturally a chestnut brown with quite a lot of grey esp as the front

My tea detailed above turns the white hair blond.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 04/06/2019 21:37

Thanks @Rooftree don’t do it yourself. You’ll need more hilites to get break up the brown and eventually get rid of it altogether. Basically what I would do is a couple of full heads of hilites over the next couple of months and when it’s blonde enough start adding a base colour too. When the hairdresser has done all of that you’ll be able to take it over yourself.

The result from an ash blonde on your natural colour/roots, completely depends on how much grey there is, how much brown there is and how much natural warmth you have.

I have airbrush who is 100% grey. So on her roots I use 9-00 igora royal(Schwarzkopf) with 6% developer. I add a scatter of pre-lightener hilites every second or third colour and the result is fab. It’s a gorgeous cool blonde.

I have another client who is about 30% grey and the 9-00 would be disastrous on her so I use 12-19+12-22 with 12%, and some pre lightener hilites through it every time and she is a gorgeous ash blonde too.

So it totally depends on the level of grey and the warmth in your hair. Get the hairdresser to get you to the color you want and then ask what they use. They have to tell you.

Just one last thing, be careful if you use professional colour. If it goes wrong you have absolutely no comeback with them as you are not a qualified hairdresser.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 04/06/2019 21:39

I have a client not an airbrush🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

Rooftree · 04/06/2019 21:43

Thanks lorelei, it’s very scientific isn’t it, and also quite confusing! I can see why you’re advising not to do it myself. I couldn’t understand really why there aren’t any light blond semi perms out here which I could just use and I still can’t but maybe this is a lot more complicated than I’d thought

OP posts:
ffiffi8 · 04/06/2019 21:45

You could try toner? Purple shampoo.. to make blonde hair/white hair more of an ash colour?

ffiffi8 · 04/06/2019 21:46

Sorry just seen that you've tried toner x

hawleybits · 04/06/2019 22:21

I have this problem but my grey is around 50% and particularly white at the front. I use a Superdrug toner - like a wash in/wash out shampoo which usually lasts through two or three washes.
I use a golden blonde shade, but it produces a subtle light blonde effect. It looks blonde, rather than grey.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 04/06/2019 22:31

@Rooftree there are no blonde semi permanent colours simply because semi permanent colours cannot lighten hair. You need permanent colour to lighten

Rooftree · 05/06/2019 06:31

But I don’t want to lighten lorelei, that’s my point! I want to tint the white hairs! Which is why I was asking what the older ladies with white hair who are blond use? They must be adding colour to their white hair surely?

Women with white hair who tint their hair are still using a developer so the colour penetrates the hair. Even semi-permanent tints/dyes use peroxide.

Unless you are prepared to use a wash in/out product - all others contain developer. If this developer is also being applied to hair that is mixed pigment (white and previous natural colour) then the results are likely to be brassy because over the counter dyes only lift 1-2 tones.

Basically there is no product that will only dye white hair and leave the darker untouched unless it is a wash-in/out depositing product because all other ones contain peroxide- called 'developer'.

People who want to go blonde with dark hair go through a two part process. Firstly the hair is lifted with bleach- either all over of with highlights to a pale yellow colour. Once achieved it is then toned to chosen shade. This toner is mixed with developer- before you ask- so it 'sticks' to the hair and doesn't wash straight out.

Are you the woman who posted with henna in her hair and PPD allergy? If so - like I said in previous thread- it would be wise to go natural.

Rooftree · 05/06/2019 07:02

No that wasn’t me, I don’t have an allergy
