Blond hair question

There are many older women out there whose hair must be naturally white but have it coloured a beigy ashy blond colour.
How the hell is this done?!
All blond dyes which are perm have bleach in to lighten darker hair burnI would bet money that these women with white hair aren’t bleaching their already white hair surely?
There must be a blond dye that deposits colour without lightening but I sure as hell cant find it.
I tried to move to semi perm as this wouldn’t bleach but there are literally none that are blond, they are all darker. Even a castings ash blond one isn’t blond, it’s much darker and is also gingery.
So please please someone tell me, how on earth do I add ash blond colour to my greys? There HAS to be a way and I truly don’t understand why I can deposit browns but not blonds. These older women must be doing it, how?? Not everyone who wants blond hair has darker hair, some of us have white or greying hair that we want to tint blond!! Please please help!

Another question if I can though, If semi perm have peroxide in to lift and lighten by a couple of shades then how do they wash out after 24 washes?

I'm in the same boat, but very grey on top. The only place that managed to make it not look grey and grow out ok was an Aveeda salon. They used a toner on highlights. I get what you're saying though, desperately searching for a cheaper option and one that doesn't involve bleaching white hair, wrecking it when it's white anyway!?

Rooftree, the tea I make to dye my hair, is light enough not to show on the hair I have with pigment in it. It really does just colour the white hair that I have blond. It is pretty subtle and my hair really is is multitonal. All the semi box dyes I tried previously, like you, I found too dark, even though they were supposed to be blonde. My tea turned my hair from a steely grey to ash blonde. It really was steely grey too, grown from having chemo. I was pleased my tea worked because I really did not want more chemicals in my system!

People who want to go blonde with dark hair go through a two part process

I had dyed black hair and put a bleach box dye over the top, it went orange (thankfully I had a pixie cut so damage minimal), I waited a few weeks then put another bleach box dye over the top and voila I was bleach blonde. Wouldn't try that now I'm not a teenager anymore though Grin

It sounds like it does work mountain. How did you discover it?
I might give it a try but I’m just frustrated that I don’t understand the hair dye thing though. Semi perm hair dyes that wash out after a few weeks can’t permanently change the colour of hair. They just add colour. So why isn’t there a blond one that just adds colour? I simply dont understand. If I did, I think I’d be more willing to forget it and move on. I know that sounds a bit crazy...

Is find a decent home hairdresser who you can Karen goi g too. A lot of the salons just have different people in and you need consistency

Ask about for recommendations on Facebook or something.

I’ve just box dyed my dd hair and it’s gone a bit brassy. We bought a toner from amazon that’s supposed to be the bees knees so going to put that on tonight.

highhighmountain · 05/06/2019 07:41

Rooftree, I just googled 'natural hair dyes' and looked at YouTube then made my own dye.

Turmeric is a powerful dye that gives golden tones but too much will turn the hair yellow as people use this to turn their hair cartoon yellow. I use a very small pinch using the handle of a flat handled teaspoon. The golden tones are useful, though because it is what turns the hair from looking grey to blonde. Camomile is less powerful but also gives golden tones, I use 6 teabags for a pot. Redbush gives reddish tones, I use 2 bags for a pot. Coffee gives brown tones, I use quarter of a teaspoon.

Here is the colour of my hair now.(in 2 different lights because of the sun this morning.)

The tea is very easy. I just pour it over dry hair and comb through and dry. I pour it on dry hair just to ensure even distribution. It might work on wet hair. You could experiment with a strand of hair.

highhighmountain · 05/06/2019 07:47

So why isn’t there a blond one that just adds colour?

I think they just make them too dark with too much brown in.

Rooftree · 05/06/2019 07:51

It’s more than that though mountain. Perm dyes go as light as platinum blond but the semi ones only go to medium ash blond it seems. They simply don’t make the pale blond ones. This is what I don’t understand, there must be a reason why you can temporarily add brown but not temporarily add blond, but I’ve never found an answer

I don't know Roof but I have found natural pigments will do it. Lasting wise probably only last a wash or two but it is less messy than box dye. It is quicker and less difficult to throw a tea on than styling hair, I find. Grin

highhighmountain · 05/06/2019 08:02

Oh and permanent dyes all beach the hair before adding colour. It's why they often contain peroxide. I found that out in the 80s after trying to dye my hair the original light brown after using Sun In lightener. I was sick of darker roots. They appeared to work then bleached up as much in the sun as Sun in! I had to grown the blonde out.

highhighmountain · 05/06/2019 08:03

Bleach not beach.

Rooftree · 05/06/2019 08:04

I can see that mountain. It sounds nice to abandon the dyes for something more natural but why puts me off is the regularity of it. I wash my hair every other day and I don’t think I could cope with colouring it each time I wash. Something that lasts 20 or so washes would be perfect for me

OP posts:
Rooftree · 05/06/2019 08:05

Yes, I’m avoiding perm dyes for that very reason. I don’t want blond hair as such I want to just colour the white hair I have which was why I was looking at a semi or a perm which doesn’t have bleach. But apparently it’s impossible although I have no idea why!

OP posts:
PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 05/06/2019 08:06

They have it in semi- perms but at a lower level. They never completely leave the hair either and alter the structure of the hair.

Rooftree · 05/06/2019 08:09

So the claim to wash out after 28 washes is Rubbish then?

OP posts:
PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 05/06/2019 08:10

Basically- when it comes to hair dye- if you have two products to mix together then one of then is a developer.

Rooftree · 05/06/2019 08:11

So does that mean a semi won’t wash out, it has to grow out?

OP posts:
highhighmountain · 05/06/2019 08:15

I wash my hair every other day and I don’t think I could cope with colouring it each time I wash.

Really the tea is just like a rinse. Why not try making a pot up and dip a strand of wet hair in it to see what effect it has on the colour. If it works well enough you could then just chuck a beaker of it over your hair in the shower or over the sink before you dry it.

highhighmountain · 05/06/2019 08:16

And as I say it doesn't fade completely after a wash. You could just test how long it lasts on you.
