No alcohol

This is probably a health subject but I want to know what effect giving up alcohol has done for your looks. So, style and beauty related too.

I love a glass (or three) of wine, the odd g & t or beer. I have a slight tummy but I am menopausal and my weight seems to have rearranged itself and moved to tum, but might be wine belly.

I have sinus problems which seems to get worse on alcohol days.

I have natural dark circles and age is making my eyes sink even more. Drink is a dehydrator which obviously makes the sunken eyes worse, and also affects sleep so dark circles get darker!

I am thinking of giving it up, perhaps just for a few months to see if I feel better without it. And if it does, perhaps forever.

To spur me on, tell me what benefits giving up has made to your looks, body, weight.

My face is less puffy. I'm still fat though.

I stopped drinking completely three years ago. It’s not necessarily ‘forever’, but I feel so much better without it that I can’t see me starting again. DH stopped at the same time, and we initially said it was for 100 days, but by that time the habit was broken and we never got round to starting again. My eyes and skin are definitely clearer, and I sleep much better without it. We’ve had loads of celebrations and holidays since then, and managed to enjoy ourselves just fine without it. Be aware for everyone else thinking you are weird though, and our social life did take a hit, as we hadn’t realised how alcohol focussed it was.

I don’t drink much and do have pretty good skin Smile

tableandchairs1 · 03/06/2019 08:06

I used to have a glass of wine with my dinner every single night. Since I stopped my face has de-puffed, eyes look clearer and I've lost 8 lbs! Smile

I've cut right back on alcohol since January this year. I only have the occasional glass of wine now and don't drink at all during the week, just a couple of glasses one night of the weekend.
In all honesty I feel so much better. More energy, sleep better and sinus problems have improved greatly. Migraines and headaches much less frequent.
However looks wise I've not noticed anything at all - and I'd say I've only lost about 2 pounds in total over the 5 months.

CountFosco · 03/06/2019 20:02

When I was pregnant (and so not drinking) I lost weight everywhere except the bump. Only lifestyle change was not drinking. I think I eat more junk when I've had a couple of glasses never mind the calories in the alcohol.

Personally giving up alcohol did nothing for my skin/ appearance/health
I have pretty shit skin and stubborn dark circles though

nzeire · 03/06/2019 20:33

No difference whatsoever! Annoying.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/06/2019 20:35

No difference here as well. Sleep better though.

Sorry!

Very · 04/06/2019 13:46

Gave it up for Lent, so 7 weeks no alcohol - no real difference to my skin or weight, I have to say. Slept better, mind you. My skin has always been good though no matter how much I drink (thank God). Does drinking make most people's skin worse? Or is it the associated bad food and bad sleep?

sweetheart · 04/06/2019 15:18

I stopped drinking for a few months last year and can honestly say I didn't notice any difference in my health or appearance and i didn't loose any weight either - I was very annoyed about that.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 04/06/2019 15:28

Face much less puffy. Rozacea marginally better. Lost weight. Sleep better and no longer wake in night with beer fear. More energy. Less moody. Like myself better. Wink

Sarcelle · 04/06/2019 15:37

Thanks all. A bit disappointing, mixed results.

I am going to give it a go. I don't sleep great on wine days and that exacerbates the sunken eye, dark circles I have. So, hopefully that will make me look less knackered.

YMMV.

Also, you'll definitely save some money.

MonkeyfromManchester · 04/06/2019 16:22

My skin looks really good. I’ve been off the booze for a month. I’ve had more energy (better sleep, liver not working overtime?) so exercise is miles easier. I recommend.

Goldenhedgehogs · 06/06/2019 22:47

I gave up alcohol for two years, didn't lose weight but everyone said my skin looked better. I also slept better and was able to get out of bed and do stuff straight away. So basically was a brighter more sparkier person. I am back to drinking now and even though I keep within 14 units a week I still think I am duller in a mornings and skin is murkier. I love the taste of booze though so am putting up with being slightly uglier and slower!

managedmis · 07/06/2019 01:42

How much do you actually drink per night though?

I love a glass (or three) of wine, the odd g & t or beer.

^^

If I drink one glass of wine a night I feel fine the day after, skin doesn't look different. I know if I drank 3 glasses I'd feel like shit for a good few days, bloated, grey skin etc

trader21c · 07/06/2019 06:35

I had a mini bottle of wine last night and I definately feel a bit less sharp compared with other mornings when I didn’t drink the night before - it was nice though!!
