Having oily hair is incredibly tedious.

Yesterday I mowed the lawn at lunch time and was all sweaty and dirty so had a shower at about 2.30pm. Washed hair etc.

Woke up this morning and hair is visibly oily for a good inch of roots. So we're talking a turnaround of about 15 hours.

Seriously? This is so boring. When I was a teenager I was a grease ball but I really never thought I'd still be dealing with this in my mid 40s, FFS.

I resent constantly worrying about my hair, I resent having to wash it so much and the ensuing dry ends that occur. I resent always having to have a supply of dry shampoo and fretting if I come close to running out. I resent having to wear my hair up most days as on dry shampoo days it always looks like I'm the Lion King. I resent always checking my damn hairline. I resent somehow feeling inherently grubbier than other women who can somehow get away with washing their hair twice a week.

I know there's no solution - Lord knows I've spent the last 30 years trying every shampoo under the sun - but it just pisses me off and I really needed a rant this morning!! Angry

Well I can confirm at least that the tip about giving a teeny squirt of dry shampoo along the hairline on freshly washed hair does seem to have paid off this morning.

Unbelievably I didn't have to actually use any this morning, it still looked pretty clean!

Im still wearing it up cos I'm at work and I'm paranoid, but am very pleasantly surprised. Especially as you use much less. Normally when you have to do it in the morning you're creating quite the toxic cloud!

I'm definitely going to try to remember to do it every time I wash my hair.

I'm so tired of being told not to wash so often. I'd be an itchy mess. Plus, it doesn't make any sense... does washing hair more often make it less dry? Of course not!

SarahBeeney · 04/06/2019 12:33

I've just seen this on the Daily Fail. Let's all try it!

TheRLodger · 04/06/2019 12:36

I have fine straight hair and so gets greasy really easily. My nightmare is finding suitable shampoo. There’s so many “moisture locking” dry hair shampoos on the market but bearly by for the opposite issue

ElspethFlashman · 04/06/2019 13:39

That's just a sponsored post. They do that all the time. It's just PR placement. The DM is just a magazine. I think its highly unlikely to have any ingredients we haven't tried in something else. Especially at that price.

@ElspethFlashman oh 😕👎

Thedarklady · 04/06/2019 16:14

There desperately needs to be a tablet or treatment for hormones or whatnot as no-one should have to wash their hair everyday for some semblance of normality!

Quintella · 04/06/2019 16:18

If you have very straight and very fine hair oil is likelier to slide down the hair shaft much quicker than it would on coarser or curlier hair. So not sure there's a cure for that!

Quintella · 04/06/2019 16:21

With dry shampoo I get two days out of my hair. I would be lost without it. Definitely spray it on after washing and blowdrying to avoid grease getting started in the first place.

Quintella · 04/06/2019 16:27

I also like that it adds a bit of volume to my hair.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/06/2019 16:30

If I didn’t brush it maybe, I do try and limit brushing, because that spreads the oil around.

I wash every other day. So tomorrow is wash day, today it’s up. I will try the dry shampoo and see if on fresh hair it’s any less oily.

Biancadelrioisback · 04/06/2019 16:40

Telling someone who had had greasy hair their whole life to try not washing their hair every day is like telling someone who has lost their keys to check their keyring. Of course we've tried that! It's basic greasy hair 101.

Danglingmod · 04/06/2019 17:09

Yeah, and I don't even brush my hair all day at all (I comb it when wet then dry with fingers or air dry it and wear in a bun all day) so that's not the issue. Still a complete grease ball by bedtime. This is just winter hair. It's even worse in the summer.

Danglingmod · 04/06/2019 17:10

In fact, some days, I put it in a bun wet, and by bedtime, the ends are still wet but the roots are greasy!!

championquartz · 04/06/2019 18:30

@Thedarklady people have used spironolactone with good effect for intolerable greasiness. Tho how long you can stay on it I’m not sure. And whether you’d need to see a derm or not. Same goes for Roaccutane, a tiny dose once or twice a week I’ve heard. But it is more toxic.
I haven’t tried either but have been sorely tempted. I’ve been on a proper course of Roaccutane in the past and gosh it was fantastic. A small dose so my only side effect was dry lip. I sort of mourned when my course was finished. I’m a little less oily than I used to be but still a definite Mrs wash-your-hair-everyday.

DrFoxtrot · 05/06/2019 19:57

Seconding @FloofyDoof and Kerastase Bain Divalent shampoo, I've managed to get to washing my hair alternate days with this.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 05/06/2019 20:10

Oh god yes. I went through 4 months living in a remote area with limited water and washing hair once a week. Still oily AF by the end of it.
Apple cider vinegar was no help and stripped out my colour.
Bleach helps a little, but the only thing that really made a difference was the second trimester of each pregnancy. Bliss!

lucymegan · 05/06/2019 20:14

Only thing I found that was like magic in a bottle was washing up liquid 🤷🏻‍♀️

domestichiefofstaff · 05/06/2019 20:14

Blatantly placemarking so I can come back later and browse! I'd love to try a summer camping festival but it's not going to happen until I'm cured of my greasy locks! Shiny glossy and healthy looking for a few hours after washing, no grey... I'm 45... but greasy AF!

ElspethFlashman · 05/06/2019 22:22

OK so Im at the end of Day 3 and no oil. This is pretty good going.

Day 1: Wash hair and the slightest merest puff of dry shampoo along hairline when dry.

Day 2: Did absolutely nothing all day (!!) then preemptive spritz of dry shampoo at night + hair in bun all night.

Day 3 (today) : Did absolutely nothing again!

So yep, I can proclaim you get an extra day out of the method of dry shampoo after washing.

Tomorrow morning i'll be washing my hair and definitely doing the same thing. Really happy with the experiment, especially as it doesn't feel like there's any build up. Is it possible you end up using LESS dry shampoo if you use a minimal amount preemptively??!

What shampoo are you using. My hair feels greasy when freshly washed currently.

KatharinaRosalie · 06/06/2019 11:31

Dobby this sounds like product build up - a good clarifying/deep cleansing shampoo should help with this.

championquartz · 06/06/2019 11:38

Elspeth can I ask which dry shampoo you're using?

paddington34 · 06/06/2019 15:50

Best thread ever I am trying this and praying it works for me too. Any dry shampoo recommendations?
