Having oily hair is incredibly tedious.

Yesterday I mowed the lawn at lunch time and was all sweaty and dirty so had a shower at about 2.30pm. Washed hair etc.

Woke up this morning and hair is visibly oily for a good inch of roots. So we're talking a turnaround of about 15 hours.

Seriously? This is so boring. When I was a teenager I was a grease ball but I really never thought I'd still be dealing with this in my mid 40s, FFS.

I resent constantly worrying about my hair, I resent having to wash it so much and the ensuing dry ends that occur. I resent always having to have a supply of dry shampoo and fretting if I come close to running out. I resent having to wear my hair up most days as on dry shampoo days it always looks like I'm the Lion King. I resent always checking my damn hairline. I resent somehow feeling inherently grubbier than other women who can somehow get away with washing their hair twice a week.

I know there's no solution - Lord knows I've spent the last 30 years trying every shampoo under the sun - but it just pisses me off and I really needed a rant this morning!! Angry

I honestly think my hair would destroy the pillowcase. Sad

Yup - oily hair, oily skin, but in my 40s without even crow's feet.

I've also tried not washing and every grease control shampoo, but nothing. So now I use a nourishing shampoo instead - roots are still oily, but at least the rest of the hair does not look like straw.

Thesunrising · 02/06/2019 20:24

My husband has a really greasy head so much that it leaves a head shaped stain on the pillow slips. He’s recently switched to a tea tree oil based shampoo and washing hair every other day rather than every day - which seems to have helped a bit.

Might be worth trying products that are curly girl friendly and don’t have any silicones in which coat the hair and can weigh it down making it feel heavier and greasier. I use Shea black castor oil and apple cider vinegar clarifying shampoo to get rid of build up - I don’t use it more often as it is ‘really’ drying. Apple cider vinegar rinse has the same effect - might be worth a try?

BentNeckLady · 02/06/2019 20:24

Mines a load better since started using lush shampoo bars and stopped using conditioner. I can go two or three days between hair washes now.

Lwmommy · 02/06/2019 20:31

Ditch the conditioner!

I have lots of fine hair and it always looked greasy until I started using kids 2 in 1 shampoo.

A) herbal essences do one that smells like bake well tart, it's delicious smelling
B) my hair is not weighed down by the conditioner making it look flat and greasy

I alternate between the kids shampoo and supermarket own brand tea tree shampoo and I wash my hair max 3 times a week now. Much much much better than when I was buying expensive salon brand super shampoo and conditioner which was great for the first few washes then started to fail.

ItWentInMyEye · 02/06/2019 20:35

I'm 31 and have washed my hair every day since I was about 11. I started on the mini pill in January and it's genuinely stopped my hair being as greasy! I could now go 2 days without washing it if I wanted to.

PickAChew · 02/06/2019 20:47

I've got thick, coarse, hair, so the greasiness wasn't always visible, but by about 36 hours after washing, my scalp felt and often smelled disgusting.

As I have a bit of wave and i was sick of fighting the wave, I decided to give curly girl method a go and, as part of that, stopped using conditioners and styling products with silicones in. The effect was almost instant. Because I'm no longer coating my hair (and scalp) in something impermeable and non water soluble in an attempt to make it shinier and less frizzy, the grease I do produce is no longer just sitting there, being sticky, and it's not getting smelly any more. I'm actually fine for 3 days, now.

Willowtreecottage · 02/06/2019 20:59

If you’ve suffered with dry shampoo upsetting your scalp - try the Klorane one.
Boots and Amazon have it - much more gentle!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/06/2019 21:05

I haven’t tried cider vinegar. Do I rinse with it after shampoo?

Thesunrising · 02/06/2019 21:30

I do the ACV rinse (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) then shampoo it out. There are lots of different recipes / quantities for ACV rinse so you might need to experiment with it a bit.

Ugh approaching 40 and same problem SadMy hair was always my pride and joy, so healthy and shiny, never had oily hair or skin even as a teenager. Since having DS 6 years ago however I've had constant hormonal issues that we haven't quite got to the bottom of yet and one of the side effects is oily hair and skin! When it's particularly bad I wash my hair and can feel the oil even as I'm drying it. It really gets me down.
Have been wondering recently if I'm peri menopausal and it's partly to blame, but apparently estogen and FSH levels etc are ok?

PersonaNonGarter · 02/06/2019 22:15

Greasy hair here but, yes, definitely fewer wrinkles. I think that’s an ok trade off but OMG the time - the crazy amount of time - I have to spend on my hair everyday, washing and styling.

SarahBeeney · 02/06/2019 23:15

I have to use conditioner as my hair is like straw after shampooing..... this is due to the highlights I have because my hair is greasy!! (And I like being blonde).

If I don't blow dry my hair it looks even greasier so I always dry it well, and then a few squirts of dry shampoo (I also have a fringe).

The best shampoo I've used is Paul Mitchell Two but it's too pricey for me to use all the time. I'm going to try a Lush bar mentioned up thread.

Dry Shampoo.... I find the Batiste one for blonde's much better than the standard ones.

Always wear my hair up on day two.

What pisses me off is that so many companies do shampoo/conditioner for dry/damaged or whatever but not many for greasy. I like the John Frida for blondes range but they're so moisturising 😱

Candleglow7475 · 02/06/2019 23:39

Me too ... I’m a greasy haired person with very few wrinkles for my age. I had made the connection between oily hair and less wrinkles.
I consider it a success if I can get to end of day 2 without washing. Elvive clay or Pantene micellar are the only ones which can all me to do this, otherwise I’m visibly oily and I’m sure it smells like a wax crayon if I leave it any longer (grim) 😕

JaneGlorianaVillanueva · 02/06/2019 23:44

Raises hand in solidarity. Fine, super-straight and shiny hair that can't go more than 24hrs before roots are glued to scalp.

I have the exact same hair type - I went into roaccutane for my skin earlier this year and it's really dried everything out on my body so I now feel lucky to have super straight, super shiny hair that only needs washing twice a week!!!

Thallo · 02/06/2019 23:55

I swerve conditioner most of the time as it just weighs my hair down.

Always blow dry and most importantly of all apply a small amount of dry shampoo to the roots/fringe after blowdrying to prevent grease appearing in the first place. Without this my hair would look so sad and lank by the the afternoon.

FloofyDoof · 03/06/2019 02:33

Oily hair is so annoying. I have oily hair and skin and it's taken a lot of trial and error with products but I've got a good routine going now that keeps it at manageable levels.

Kerastase Bain Divalent is fantastic for oily roots and dry ends. It's expensive but you don't need to use a lot. There is usually a good offer for twin packs on justmylook or allbeauty.

I use any conditioner I fancy, but only on the mid lengths and ends, I keep it away from roots and scalp.

The klorane nettle dry shampoo for greasy hair is the best I've found too. I also spray a little on my roots after blow drying, especially in the summer. I buy a few cans at a time when I do an order for the French skincare and shower stuff from easyparapharmacie, because its a lot cheaper.

Notanotheruser111 · 03/06/2019 04:32

I have really greasy hair as well, mine I would wash in the morning and it would be gross by bedtime. just to add to the weird and wonderful solutions. I use egg to wash it, cold water wet lather up a beaten egg I put a couple of drops of essential oil in leave it for about 5 mins and rinse it out in cold water. Grease gone. When I was doing it regularly I could wash on the morning of 3rd day.

joystir59 · 03/06/2019 05:38

Stop washing your hair! If you can bear to leave it for 6 weeks you will discover that your scalp returns to normal ie stops producing oil at an accelerated rate.

ElspethFlashman · 03/06/2019 06:57

The longest I've ever gone without washing my hair was in my early twenties when I had a really bad viral thing and couldn't get out of bed. By the end it looked like I was wearing a black swimming cap. And I have long blonde hair! So nope, won't be trying that, thanks.

I've pretty much tried every shampoo mentioned here, including the expensive ones. Depressingly none seem to make any difference. I bought the L'Oréal clay one the other day. I remember it as drying on my ends? But hey, it was half price, lol.

I'm fascinated by those who say to spritz dry shampoo immediately after washing? Does that actually make a difference with longevity?

Meant to say, that longest period was 9 days. ^

Shampoo before and after conditioner.

TheDeflector · 03/06/2019 11:00

Omg. Will people stop saying "just stop washing your hair"

It doesn't bloody work for most people with severe oil problems!!!!!

Do you not think we have tried that??
I've had over 30 years of these issues. I have literally tried everything. The only thing that works is washing my hair every damn day.

It's getting so boring now to be repeatedly told to stop washing it, when it DOES NOT WORK FOR MOST.

Thallo · 03/06/2019 11:05

I'm fascinated by those who say to spritz dry shampoo immediately after washing? Does that actually make a difference with longevity?

Absolutely. Single most important step for me. It stops grease before it starts.

justilou1 · 03/06/2019 11:11

I had dry hair all my life and then BAM! Perimenopause! Could wash it twice a day! Oh, and now I get seborrheic dermatitis as well. Scalp zits - Superb! Fucking hormones! T-Gel shampoo helps a wee bit, but it smells like dog shampoo. Nizoral and Selsun Gold are good, but they smell of egg farts. Can’t bloody win! Did I mention that the once thick, luscious mane I was for which I was once famed now resembles that of a toddler? Bastard fucking hormones!!!
