Help need classic flattering evening dress

I have to attend a formal dinner with DH in two weeks and I need an evening dress.

I'm so not used to wearing a dress have put on a bit of weight and am terrified of the whole thing!

Im 5 foot 6. A big size 14, or maybe even 16. I have a long body and short legs so dresses with a definite waist tend to look awful as my own waist is lower than the one on the dress. Think I'm a big above average nork wise. I struggle to war wrap dresses also- they never seem to wrap well on me!

I'm desperately looking for a simple, elegant, long evening dress, ideally with a low waistline. I'm thinking black May be best as it's more flattering.

I'm so desperate that I don't mind throwing around £300 at the problem.

Please, can anyone help me?

Phase eight do the best maxis imo tho there's a bit of a risk someone else will be wearing the same one

The Ralph Lauren dress looks lovely, definitely worth serious consideration.

I love the phase eight one too, but as it has a belted waist I don't think it will work on me- the waist usually sits too thigh on me as I have a long body .
