I am a bit crap with colours can anyone advise ?

I bought his dress and I'm not sure what colour cardi to wear with it. Black is not working as the dress is navy and I only have greens and browns but because of the sort of belted bit I think it needs something different and I'm rubbish at this. Any help? I will probably wear with flip flops, is that okay?

A lovely bright coral.colour would look good.

Yy coral, mint green, pale lemon, bright pink I wear these colours a lot when I wear navy.

Anything other than navy will look impossibly twee.

Why spoil a good dress with a cardigan? Leather jacket? Dark, minimal denim jacket?

If the dress were fierce a cardigan would soften it. But two gentle things together - I wouldn’t!

Do you need a cardigan? I would be going with a leather jacket for when it's cold or else just the way it is. It's a lovely dress but could look a bit nerdy with a cardi!

No a leather jacket is timeless! You don't have to go for a full on biker type of that's not your style (it is mine!) But as pps have said, a pretty dress needs toughening up or it can look too goody goody!

I think a denim jacket or an olive green combat style jacket would look good with it. Gap do good ones, especially in the men's department. I have a J Crew one and it goes with everything.

Leather jackets always get a lot of love on MN but they're not for everyone. I have a lovely one, but every time I put it on, I take it off 5 minutes later as it's just not 'me'.

Or a linen jacket/khaki jacket loads about at the moment & lots of denim as well.

Cream linen if you are classic, but a pale olive or sand combat would also look good. Bonus points if embroidered. Lavishly embroidered this year but scale back a bit and it will go on for longer.

I'm 40 and would wear a denim jacket with that dress. Biker jacket wouldn't be very summery and personally I think would be too heavy with it.

Also agree a khaki jacket would look good.

I had a lovely navy and white stripped nautical dress that I wore with a pale lemon cardy and gold pumps. It wasn't twee at all and it looked great.

I'm 50 and would wear a denim jacket, biker jacket (in pale grey) or combat jacket with it. Or a loose slouchy blazer with pushed up sleeves. I promise you, you will not look like you're trying to be younger than 41, you really won't.

41 is young! You can wear leather and denim at any age.
Anyway, I disagree that a cardigan would necessarily look twee. A lot of Japanese women wear dresses like that with a cardigan; some of them are absolute style goddesses.
