I am having a rubbish time at the moment and my hair looks awful and desperately in need of a cut. I don't have the mental strength to find my own one so can someone help! Yes I know this is pathetic.

Hair is just above shoulders and loosely wavy but in a rubbish kinky way not a sexy beachy way. It's fine but I have a lot of it. Have a cows lick at the middle front which means fringes are out.

I am not great with styling it so need fairly low maintenance. It's mouse/grey. I have a couple of white streaks I love. It needs a better more focused shape to stop it looking unkempt/lazy/witchy.

I am mid 40s, fairly senior professional. A bit scruffy but I like a bit of low key funky. Size 14. Facially like a fatter, plainer Gillian Anderson so quite strong nose/cheekbones.

Don't care about length overly except I know I can't take very short. I hate extreme graduated bobs.

Anyone got any ideas? I genuinely can't focus on stuff but need the boost as I look unkempt and scruffy.

Could you post a photo as it might be easier to advise?

Right up until the end of your post I was going to suggest short, I.e. sophisticated pixie... and bleached and toned to a lilac/grey. Your description pretty much described my hair (inc the cows lick) and I cut mine to a pixie a few years ago and never looked back. If you get the right cut it should take seconds to style by blasting it dry and messing it up with product.
I’m also a professional btw and I feel much more put together with short hair.

Go to a great salon (read: expensive and fancy), get the top stylist and ask for their recommendation

Gamorasgran · 29/05/2019 17:41

Thinkle I do keep thinking that actually. Some kind of Vicky McClure job. But people kept telling me to re grow my short hair previously.....

I have tried the top stylist thing before and just ended up with nothing special to be honest.

I may go and look up Vicky/Gillian Anderson with short hair and sod everyone else...

Go to a good hairdresser, it doesn't have to be expensive. If you know someone with hair like yours but cut nicely, ask them where they go.
You need a hairdresser who will cut your hair so that it behaves. Whereabouts in the UK are you?

You need a growing out hairstyle. The right cut and you'll be able to just stick a comb through it after you've washed it and it will work.

How about this?

How short do you think is extreme short? I'm increasingly of the opinion that more women suit short hair than think they do. And a sharp short cut will definitely look more together than something long and shapeless. I'd ask people with great haircuts where they get it cut and then go there. I do think you get a better new cut from someone who already cuts your hair and knows how it grows which takes a few cuts.
