Black summer dress for work

Clarabellawilliamson · 28/05/2019 15:31

We have a tradition of wearing all black one day a week at work (and listening to Jonny Cash!). This is easy in the winter but increasingly hard in warm weather!

Oh wise mumsnetters can you help me find a black dress I can wear to work that I won't boil in?

It doesn't need to be super smart or even tailored, but must be on or below the knee, sleeveless is probably ok but definitely not strappy or low cut (secondary school teacher!) . I'm not long back after maternity leave and am conscious of a tummy that I never had before, so hating all my old summer clothes! Max budget about £40.

Is it doable?!

Anyone know about the length of these dresses. I work in a corporate environment and although there isn’t the expectation that we need to wear suits everyday, it does need to look professional. I’m quite tall and many dresses end up above the knee and not really suitable.

Ooh thanks everyone! I like the look of the shirt dresses. I would just need to make sure they are not too short!!

Parker there are about a squillion midi dresses around at the minute which are a perfect length for work, especially for those of us who are tall, have you tried any? I know anything above the knee is always v mini on me so always go for midi

I had a look around John Lewis this weekend but nothing jumped out at me. I’m visiting my parents in Brussels at the weekend and am going to try some of the small shops there where I’ve been successful in the past with style, material and length.
