Talk to me about undercuts...

My hair is ridiculously thick, every year when it starts to warm up I start to think about getting an undercut, but I'm in my 40s and when I look at photos I feel like I might be 15 years too old! Also most seem to only have the back shaved, has anyone gone round the sides as well? Ideally I'd like to take weight out all around. Typical layered styles never seem to work well for me, the shorter layers always seem to lift outwards and I look like I have a strange hair halo.

How often do you need to get them re-shaved, and can you do it yourself without too much difficulty? I'm quite lazy and not sure I'd keep up going to the hairdresser every few weeks in all honesty. If anyone is willing to share photos, that would also be fab!

OP, I also have masses of hair and layers look choppy and weird.
I had a consultation with a new hairdresser just today and next week I'm booked in for internal layers. You basically keep the top and bottom layers of your hair and the hairdresser chops away at the middle to reduce the bulk. Hopefully it'll look more grown up than an undercut but achieve the same, I'll let you know once it's been done. Could be a complete disaster of course Confused

I’ve got an undercut, just at the back though. It makes a massive difference to how my hair sits! Layers look rubbish in my hair too!
I trim mine at home inbetween hairdresser visits using clippers and two mirrors so I can see the back of my head. I tie my hair up on the top of my head and lay my finger along the undercut parting so there’s no danger of going too far! It took ages the first time I did it but it’s been a couple of years now so I’m pretty fast at it.
Do it!

My dd really wants an undercut she has a thick wavy bob and I think it would look great however school disagrees Hmm
She's had the internal layers that babyshark mentioned. It looks great and certainly got rid of the triangular shape it had before.
I love an undercut and I don't think you're too old, go for it!
I would quite like one but I don't think dd would ever forgive me.

I'd never heard of internal layers before, that's something I'm going to have a look at!
